Poets are the Scum of the Earth

Most art
Art that society values and cherishes
Deals with pain
Rather it be the written word or the structured noise or the blurred image
The most popular attempts of artistic expression were done by madmen
And were about the pain they felt inside or saw around them
And the people applauded
Because we can all relate in our own lonesome individual hells
Pain
The only thing that can bring the whole world together and tear us apart again
The best artists are those skilled at exploiting
Their pain and the pain of others
So it makes sense that to be a Great Artist
You must have experienced an uncanny amount of it
Pain pain PAIN Pain pain PaIn PAiN PAIN! PAIN!
I’ve felt it. We’ve been acquainted.
I am lucky to have not drowned in it yet.
I hope I never do.
So while others dream of becoming famous writers or poets or whatever
I dream of remaining an untalented hack.
Of hiding out with the middle age lost souls at poetry readings
To talk about writing more than I write
Or talk myself up as a writer to impress girls at the bar
For every great word ever written down
Someone had to experience a mile of pain
It’s not worth it
I don’t want the words to come find me
And I have absolutely no respect for anyone that does
Get over here!

I read this earlier, thought about it, and wanted to respond but wasn't sure how.

I'm still not sure, but what the hell.

I think writing, maybe all forms of art - definitely comedy - do come from hurt...that defense mechanism. Some can come from pure joy though, or simply being of another mindset altogether.

    Like Dali.

I guess really it all comes from life, the one we live, want to live, wish we hadn't lived.

A reflection - the good, bad, ugly.

If they're sincere, I respect the words, the reflections.

Should it matter from where they come, as long as they arrive?

It appears people disagree with this message and find it a foolish poem which it is in some ways. It is how I felt at the moment in time when I wrote it, feeling that poetry is too safe and just making a statement about the large number of self destructing artists that have been popular throughout time (kurt cobain, jimi hendrix, the list goes on forever). I feel detached to it as with anything i write since it was me in another state of mind. i believe that close minded thoughts and opinionated beliefs should be expressed more in creative literature.

that's not quite how it works for others but that's how it goes. we're all different in this life. words, poems come find me on a constant. in most cases it has been a mental torture chamber & i felt the crossing of the threshold from being fairly sane to completely out of my mind lost in poetic work, which is a huge undertaking in the realms of living, writing & being open to different energies all hammering away at once.

I didn't find it foolish at all and though I may see it from another angle doesn't mean I don't respect your view. Not at all.

To me, writing *can* be safe, but also terribly and wonderfully exposing. It's about release, however we get there.

(whatever gets you through the night, it's alright)

Not sure I got the last sentence of your post, though. Why limit?
