Beanie is another name for it, though it sounds goofy as fuck so I don't use it.

tbh i'm not sure if that one would count as a beanie cuz it looks like fleece, I've never seen a beanie (or a skull cap as i've heard them called) made out of anything that thick.

Touque and stocking cap are 100% new to me.

Touque is Canadian, and they can be any fabric. They can be more fitted or not, can have a giant fluff ball on top, whatever. I don't know why Americans don't have a set word for touques. It's like a deliberate resistance against calling them what they are. Touques.

Une 'Toque', in french, is a chef's hat. You are right.

Canadian name 'Touque' the winter hat because they are'nt able to say the french word properly.

    It's 'Tuque', not 'Touque'

We already went over the spelling several months ago. I believe there are three legit spellings in the dictionary, including touque, toque, and tuque.

I think it's cuz anything that goes on an American's head is simply (commonly) referred to as a hat (with the exception of bandanas and doo-rags). Of course there's more specific names for some things but since 'touques' are pretty much a cold weather clothing item only, they don't matter that much. For things that are more fashionable or cultural and less functional, they get specific names.

fwiw my auto correct refuses to accept touque as a word. It thinks I mean torque.

The only thing I dislike about this time of the year is I can't ever get the temperature right. I'm either too warm or too cold. Usually cold in the morning, then I'm hot at work, then I get home and I have to turn up the heat, then it gets too hot and I have to turn on the fan and then I'm cold again, lol
