Bethel Township man shot rifle at barn from roof of house, police say

    Reading Eagle

Bethel Township police arrested a township man after he fired a rifle several times at a barn from the roof of his house, alarming his wife and daughter and the daughter's fiance as they sat on the porch below, officials said today.

Ronald L. Lutz, 49, was taken into custody without incident after police arrived at the house in the 400 block of Schubert Road in response to a 9-1-1 call Monday about 7 p.m., police said.

They said Jon Knight, the fiance, called about someone shooting from the second floor of the house.

Lutz remained free following arraignment early Tuesday before Senior District Judge Gloria W. Stitzel in Reading Central Court on charges of reckless endangerment, disorderly conduct and public drunkenness.

    Police gave this account:

Knight was sitting on the back porch with Lutz's wife, Donna, and their daughter, whose name wasn't available, when they heard gunshots. They discovered that Lutz was on the roof of the porch shooting toward the barn.

When Bethel and Tulpehocken Township police arrived, Donna Lutz told police that her husband had been shooting but he had gone to bed.

Police told the wife to tell Lutz that they needed to speak to him. He came down in a bathrobe and was taken into custody.

Lutz said he was shooting toward the barn at a groundhog, but did not check to see if anyone was in the barn. He admitted he drank about a gallon of whiskey that evening.

A GALLON of whiskey??  I'm surprised he's alive, let alone that he could stand and hold something.
