edited June 2006 in Given To Fly (live)
I know in the past I may have seemed a bit hostile to people flying to this show from out of town. I wanted to make this post to welcome everyone flying in to out fair city and give you guys some good ideas for some neat things to see and do while you're here.
These destinations are in no particular order and any other fellow PDXer can add to the list as they may!

#1 Powells Bookstore http://www.powells.com/
The largest independent bookstore in the nation ANY PJ fan that has an IQ larger than thier shoe size should come and check out this bookstore. Several stories high with loads of used, new and rare books for sale. A Portland landmark for sure! Be sure to pick up thier free walking maps of Portland. 1005 W Burnside, Portland, OR

#2 The World of Mcmenamins http://www.mcmenamins.com/
It wouldn't be too off base to call Portland "Mcmenamins Portland, Oregon"
They own one of the most popular concert halls in Portland: The Crystal Ballroom, legendary for its bouncy floors, dozens of pubs and bars, movie theatres that sreve pizza and beer and several awesome hotels. Any traveler who hasn't secured a hotel yet should check out the White Eagle Rock and Roll Hotel, the Kennedy School (formerly an elementary school they now serve drinks and have rooms, you can also go to "the principals office" a small bar that used to be a principals office that only serves the hard stuff!) and the Hotel Edgefield. All of these lie some distance away from the Schnitz but thier awesome rooms, charecter and ROCK BOTTOM prices make them totally awesome (we're talking starting price for a room with a shared bathroom as 40 bucks)

#3 Nob Hill area http://www.nobhillbiz.com/nobhill/members.do?catagory=ALL
Streching over NW 21st and 23rd the Nob Hill area offers tons of awesome shops and great restaurants. The street car also provides easy service to go downtown. The Nob Hill area also houses location #4 on our list......

#4 Music Millenium http://www.musicmillennium.com/
Portlands best CIMS music store is a great place to go for used and new music. I'll always remember meeting Stone here when he played with Brad.

#5 Multnomah Falls http://trips.stateoforegon.com/multnomah_falls/
Within driving distance of the city is a beautiful waterfall with a great hike!

#6 Forest Park http://www.friendsofforestpark.org/html/maps.html
The largest park within an urban area, Forest Park offers MILES of trails to the outdoor inclined.

#7 Washington Park Rose Garden http://www.portlandonline.com/parks/finder/index.cfm?action=ViewPark&PropertyID=1113
An international test site for roses this place is beautiful, a great destination for tourists as it shows why Portland is the City of Roses!

    Cool Restaurant List:

    The Roxy http://portland.citysearch.com/profile/8459636/portland_or/the_roxy.html
This place is open 24/7 for late night munchies and offers meals named after celebrities, the best jukebox in town, and sells "Portland Fucking Oregon" Shirts, totally sweet.

    Vege Thai
    http://vegethai.com/
For those vegetarian/veagan enthusiasts like Mr Ed Ved and myself, this place my girlfriend and I stumbled upon is a god-send. Great choices of protien and veagan peanut sauce make this a must for herbivores. The trek out to Southeast Portland is well worth it, as that neighborhood totally kicks ass.

    Baan Thai
    http://portland.citysearch.com/profile/35699636/
Thai fans looking for some annimal carcass in thier noodles can head up broadway before the show at the schnitz and enjoy the best, spciest thai in town.

    Hot Lips Pizza
    http://www.hotlipspizza.com/pizza/index.html
Portlands local pizza chain they serve envoirnmentally friendly pizza by the slice, homemade soda, and cheap pints. The location on 6th avenue would be a great place to head before the show.

    Other stuff for visitors:
Every Hour is Happy Hour! http://www.wweek.com/editorial/3229/7599/
a recent article from the willamette week details 24 hours of happy hour in Portland city limits, get your drink on everyone!

    http://trimet.org/
Heres our mass transit system, pretty convienient trip planners.

As someone who has traveled quite extensivley and eaten at a lot of great restaurants. Portland is home to many of the best restaurants in the world. Treat yourself while you are here.

but avoid Marys club. (unless you like little dive bars where strippers get up on what amounts to an extension of the bar and then pick there own music from a jukebox)....Wait a minute...scratch that...I think it is a riot. It is like a David Lynch movie. A must see. :)

    Dude,

whats worse then that is when they actually have to plug their own quarters to get the machine to work. Portland is home to many great restaurants and many strip clubs. I think the most strip clubs per capita? This does not mean there are that many great looking strippers. I would stick to the main clubs like the Acrop, Sassy's, Stars, Dolphin....

All you guys at the post party will see Mary's club...its right across the street, look for the flashing neon sign...watch out for bleachy white women with bruises and black hair in that joint though..

God this makes me miss Oregon a lot. Germany rocks ass but I love Oregon too. It's my home. You all forgot the Widmer Gasthaus. If someone is going to sample Oregon beer, they must try Widmer. And I don't mean just their overrated Hefeweizen, I mean the beers they serve on tap at the Gasthaus that you cannot get anywhere else. Amazing.
