Greek Elections - Global Financial Market Unrest

Like Whoa.

Got an email from a brokerage firm informing its clients that ALL accounts are having their margins raised THREE TIMES starting this past Friday (the 15th) and lasting at LEAST until Monday morning.

It cited concerns about potential "extreme volatility" in the global markets concerning the elections in Greece, and that anyone trading during this period should exercise extreme caution. They expect highly volatile markets throughout the evening hours today (Sunday) when markets open back up.

I've never (in my short life) heard of Brokerages raising margins for one-time events ... and by 3 fold at that.

So if you had a trading account that normally required you to maintain a balance of $5,000 to make a trade ... starting Friday, you would need $15,000 to play.

I guess they are REALLY trying to keep people from playing this event. Hmmm.

I'm still waiting to see what effect this election has on the price of precious metals. An "anti-EU" vote SHOULD send metals through the roof on volatility concerns, but somehow I suspect EVERYTHING will plummet. Baby & the bath water syndrome. We'll see.
If I was to smile and I held out my hand
If I opened it now would you not understand?

Keep us posted, and any thoughts you care to share, I'd personally love to hear them, Dimitris.

I'm VERY ignorant of Greek politics in general, but i do understand that the ramfications\implications of THIS election are relatively MASSIVE.

The globe on the whole is on the verge of a domino like scenario.
This could be the first domino.
    :(

First exit polls give the right party (New Democracy) and the left party (Syriza) together in the first posotion with 27-30% each. It gonna be a long night. Tommorrow early in the morning i am travelling with my family for the euro tour...maybe we should stay there :D

Ive visited Greece 10 times in total, both the mainland and the many islands. Its one of my most favourite places on earth. They are going through a horrible time right now but when I was in Athens 3 weeks ago, the people were just as welcoming and friendly and warm as I've always known them to be. The news and media coverage seems to be portraying the country as falling to pieces and close to collapse, but this isn't true, the majority of the people are dealing with the crisis very well in very bad conditions.
Personally I think that the best thing for Greece would be to leave the EU, the austerity measures being placed on them by Germany and others are a disgrace. If this happens then other countries might leave the EU as well, which in my opinion would be a good thing.

the problem isnt to leave EU..is how this will happen..
cos if drachma goes down like 3-5 times down after that and the conversion is like that..then we are fucked..

I think that Right party and all others ''euro-friendly'' partys will manage to have enough persons inside the parliament to be the government. There are so much money to be lost by the lenders of Greece that they will never let anything else happen here. It's no coinsidence that after the previous elections where the left party for the first time was the second one, everyone around the world was trying to convince Greeks that these are the evil ones. You should see our parents how terrified they are when listening to TV saying that is the end of the world if the left party wins.

There are difficult times coming cause every thing that they voted for like reducing the wages, taxes and more are becoming reality now. My job is accountant and all the people i know have to pay taxes maybe 3 times more than the previous year. And all that with less wage per month. We have to learn how to live with less. The party is over for Greeks but i aggree, this is not the end of the world. The problem is that i don't see any politician bastard in the jail (don't tell me about Akis, thay used him as a pre election ''victim'' and i think he's going out in aome months). That's all people say, ok i will pay more taxes but what about all them who caused this....

No KKE is the communist party, Syriza are several left wing smaller parties who became a left coalition. They hate eachother!

Ah I see, I couldn't remember if the KKE were in the coalition or not.
The left parties are always fighting each other, that's why they don't have as much power in most countries. They never learn!

I think that the bigger missed opportunity of this crisis is that we could have woken up as a nation...but we fell asleep even deeper fearing that there is the end of the world coming with Syriza and that all others, even though they voted for all these, even thought they are the 2 parties that caused all these the last 40 years, are our only hope
