Waiting for the release and subsequent reviews before taking the plunge. Zeitgeist was ok in places but a bit of a letdown. I really want to love a SP album again and I've heard some promising snippets on youtube. Fingers crossed! Have you listened to it Ed?

I'm up to "Pinwheels". I like it so far. Has a lot of the old SP sound.

After first listen, I give the album a B+. Promising return for Corgan and the new band.

I feel that after the "Oceania" track, the album starts to fizzle out after a solid start.

Billy has written quite a few shockers in his career but credit to him for trying. I've been guilty of slating him in the past but only because there's been times where he must have known how mediocre the songs were but wasn't willing to start again from scratch. I remember being highly dubious of Adore at first but I quickly grew to love that album. I think trying to ressurect the Pumpkins was an admission of struggling to make it solo and if he is going to carry the SP torch again he has to come up with quality to appease the old fans. I love that he still has the vision for SP that he did in the early days, it shows he has a lot of pride in what he does. I miss the old line-up or even the final one before the initial split but if the songwriting is there then I won't complain. I'm looking forward to hearing this. Sorry, I don't know how that became such a ramble... :D

I agree with Dr. Delight, it does fizzle out after the track Oceania, the first half is very solid. The first two tracks are great, sounds like the Pumpkins of old. The artwork is wicked too!

I think they should drop the smashing pumpkins name and stop ruining that legacy and call this the billy corgan band or billy corgan and some other people play music.

A couple listens in.....I think it starts and ends really strong, but One Diamond, One Heart-5:00 in Oceania is majorly wussified.

I'm really missing Chamberlains drums. Always loved what he added and I think it could really set this album off.
  • What happened to the reissue program, still waiting for Melon Collie to get reissued on vinyl?

I did own it once but sold when I was desperate for money to a second hand record store, very foolish this goes for hundreds now on Ebay and Amazon.

Good call Analogue. I would like Melon Collie on vinyl myself, as like you say, the price is out of most people's reach without a reissue... I have the Siamese Dream vinyl reissue and that sounds fantastic.

The Mellon Collie reissue should be released by the end of the year. Pisces Iscariot reissue is scheduled to be released on July 17.

I've only heard the first few songs, but I can already say that this record is better then Zietgeist and Machina combined (not a really hard thing to accomplish, though).

I would recommend checking it out, especially if you liked the Pumpkins but became jaded with William in the last decade.

I gave it 3 complete listens this past week. Whatever he had he lost it a long time ago. Zwan had some decent stuff. but Zeitgist and this are awful. It sounds like he's still trying to capture something that's long gone. And i dont mean because it's him with replacements. It's him trying too hard once again.

He's at the point where as a fan i wish he would've truly stopped in 2000.

Hearing good reviews on this. Metacritic has it at a 72 right now :?
I haven't listened to any new stuff since Zeitgeist, which was ok (had a few songs i liked on it). Might check it out.

After 3 or so listens, my final grade is a C+. Like I said before, it starts out promising but completely breaks down midway thru the record.
There are no standout songs per say, but it is a good effort. Nothing spectacular, but something I would give a listen to once in awhile.

I have listened through the song ociania so far so about 2/3rds

Not bad. I don't think its going to become the greatest album i've ever heard but there is some stuff on there i like so far.

Really dig the song oceania a lot

This album is a grower. I dig. Best work in years. Band seems like a cohesive unit again. Highlights for me Quasar, Violet Rays, and Pinwheels

Nice interview with BC on CNN last night...he's a pretty bright chap. I'll pick up the album tomorrow. I can't wait to hear it if some say it's better than Zeitgeist which I liked.

It's certainly a grower, i don't mind it. But it ain't a patch on the earlier stuff.

Picked it up last week and finally got a chance to listen to it today. I was pleasantly surprised. Much better than what I was expecting. Agree with everyone else and say it will be a grower and not as good as their early stuff, still better than Zeitgeist. Really dig the first track, Quasar, a lot.

Some of their earlier stuff isn't patch on their early stuff.

I'd stick this smack dab in the middle. Either above or below Mellon Collie and definitely behind Gish and Siamese Dream. The best stuff on MCIS better, but it's also incredibly bloated imo. I can't find an unlistenable song on Oceania, and several of them have really grown on me.

Pinwheels is probably my favorite right now. Just love the way it starts.

I still find myself missing Jimmy C, but I'm not gonna let that get in the way of what this record actually is.

Upon first listen, I really dig some of the tracks on here. Nothing mind blowing, but some quality songs. I agree that the first half is MUCH better. I dig Quasar and Violet Rays right now and I'm sureeee that will change the more I listen.

I really like this album thru and thru...been writing with it on loop for 2 days and not sick of it at all. Just a good album not transcendent but very good.

There's a link to a short movie (18 minutes or so) on this page. If you like the old Smashing Pumpkins videos (with the costumes, etc.), you might like it.

  • Really enjoying the new album. Its forced me to break out some old pumpkins and thats never a bad thing.

Thinking about getting tix to the Chicago show......Billy and crew really let me down the only other time I saw them.......I think he's relaxed his ego and just wants to play tunes again now.
