LA Weekly: Why This Song Sucks: "Jeremy"
http://blogs.laweekly.com/westcoastsound/2012/05/pearl_jam_jeremy_why_this_song_sucks.php\
I don't draw the same simple conclusions about this song pertaining to suicide as does the writer. There certainly isn't any "science" behind this as the editor notes. And, speaking of Eddie's mumbling, it's not as apparent in this song as in others. But, here it is for your reading pleasure....
[Editor's note: Why This Song Sucks determines why particular tracks blow using science. It appears on West Coast Sound every Wednesday.]

Song: Pearl Jam's "Jeremy"
History: Pearl Jam was a band that people liked a whole lot in the early '90s but then tried to pretend otherwise when Kurt Cobain killed himself* and Eddie Vedder didn't. "Jeremy" was the third single from Ten, their debut album.
*This is ironic because "Jeremy," regarded as one of PJ's best-ever songs, is about how a kid who killed himself made the wrong** decision.
**Suicide is extra weak, yo. Eddie Vedder had that part right. He was wrong about basically everything else though. I mean, are you even looking at his hair in the video?

First, what is a rift... err I guess, riff, 2nd - there is not a blues scale in the song. It's pretty much A major throughout.
Now Jeremy is not one of my favorites, but I like Ed's take on it, the narrator of the song is one of the bullies, not the bullied.
Still kinda funny, if people are ripping on you 20 years later, you still have to be relevant

He ran into a woman who had known Jeremy (girlfriend I think) She slapped Dave and was very upset. Told him the suicide had (obviously) been hell for the survivors. All they had wanted was healing but heard "Jeremy" every time they turned on the radio...
The cartoons are funny but damn!!!
