I think all of their songs are epic.. just depends on the listeners mood..

I heard "soon Forget" today from DTE 2003 night one today.. and thought it was epic..

By epic, do you mean like... anthems?

The whole of Ten is epic...

I was thinking about that too, if we are talking epic like a stairway to heaven 7 minute multi layered song like 'Black', 'Present tense', 'Inside job' or are we talking a song that becomes epic when played live like 'Daughter' (which does not stand out on the album) but when played lived with "tags" transcendes itself, or epic "openers or closers" like 'release', 'last exit' (my favorite opener) or 'yellow ledbetter" as a closer.

'Lukin' or 'RVM' could be epic because of it's attitude. Sometimes the song lyrics can take a simple "musically" song and make it epic like 'Hard to Imagine' or 'Indifference'. I guess sing along "athems" like Alive, Betterman or Jeremy...

Hell, I forgot what I was saying....

Maybe I do mean anthems. But like I wrote before, to me, typically the song has to rise, build and climax. This is where I completely disagree with some of the straight ahead rockers like Animal, Go, Hail Hail, Blood etc. Songs like these start at 100 mph, there really isn't a dramatic pacing difference within the song.

In Literature, dramatic arc consists of: exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and dénouement.

Lets take Present Tense for example:

    Exposition:
Opening notes of mikes guitar with Ed singing "have you seen the way that tree bends."

    Rising Action:

Chorus section - "you can spend your time alone re-digesting past regrests OH!!! Makes much more sense to live in the present tense"

    Climax:

After the final, "to live in the present tense" into one of the greatest controlled jams ever.

    Falling Action and Dénouement:

As soon as the jam ends the first notes of Eddies finger picking would be the falling action and when the rest of the band kicks in would be the dénouement.

I am also talking about multi-layered songs like Black, Present Tense and Inside Job. Also like you said, songs that transcend themselves when played live, like when Daughter gets tagged with say "its ok." Daughter by itself may not be epic but when tagged properly it truly changes.

Also totally agree with Ledbetter and Long Road.
