Looks like I was lucky to see them last night. They've cancelled all but 4 of the remaining UK dates, and their schedule upto March next year. Very strange. Splitting up?

They just posted this on their facebook page:

We sincerely apologize for the canceling of all of our tour dates. It is something we deeply regret. However, due to internal discord and irreconcilable differences of ambition we are unable to continue as a touring entity at this time. We thank each and every one of you for your amazing love & support. Our sincere hope is to have new music for you in 2013.

  • :( :( I hope it's just a break they need from each other to spend time with their families and will be back with a new album in 2013 and maybe touring again end of next year.
  • the way they phrased the tour cancellation is very strange indeed. I heard about these guys in 2011, before they were really famous, Taylor Swift was a big reason why they got big buzz.

Anyways, from my own viewing of interviews with them, they seem really down to earth, and grateful for the success they've had, and shocked they've hit the big time.

I remember an interview they did, i think with Gian Jomeshi of Q radio last year maybe and he asked them something like "so you've hit the big time, are you guys big time celebrities now?" And John Paul responded with some funny typical deadpan comment and Joy laughed it off. I didnt get the sense they were thinking they were hot shots or something like that, and were happy with the level of success they had acheieved, and werent out to write the next Britney Spears-like chart topping song. Even though of course Joy, prior to joining up with John Paul, had written I believe pop songs for other people.

So, Im confused what the "internal discord and irreconcilable differences of ambition" in this situation means and is. My interpretation of the wording of it, is that either John paul or Joy wanted or wants the band to go the pop/big band of the moment route, and the other wants the band to remain the cult/indie band that it is-popular but not huge and massive.

Its odd that this would happen, given what I said about them both being grounded individuals.

Its also odd that something like that "internal discord and irreconcilable differences of ambition", which sounds like heavy and intense stuff, not little things, would be something they see working past and working through to make new music in 2013. Im not sure how that works out. They dont agree on the direction and ambition of the band, yet are able to record music and possible release album 2?

    Headscratcher to say the least
  • rewatched the interview joy calls their partnership a "family thing".
joys previous work with disney is mentioned and the question is "how do you reconcile your different pasts and music preferences when it comes to write", and they both seem to suggest they just chase the muse, there is no discord or fighting. they said they just follow their noses.

Joy and John Paul talk about how they wanted everything stripped down on Barton hallow and Gian says "wasnt there a point you disagreed about maybe a drum machine on a track", and they both laugh and John Paul talks about how, the fact they are older, in the buisness as opposed to 18 or 19, they dont fight and dont act snobby to one another. they follow their noses, and love playing just the two of them because they have ultimate control of every aspect of their art, whereas if they added more of a band they wouldnt get to.

One interesting point of the interview that if forgot was that John Paul mentions they've stayed indie because they both were on major labels previous, so they know the ins and outs and limitations and positives of a major. And he mentioned that each step the band takes, they ask each other "is a major going to help us with this, or would we be better served on an indie". They build their own label by bringing their own people. This way worked for us, they say.

Gian asks them "how do you handle the success". John paul says something that may be pertinent to this "the plan is and talk to me later this year to see if this is the case, but the plan is to keep making music and put out the new album just as we've been doing everything prior. the worst thing we can do is write another barton hollow. Every artist that has ever chased a hit record it has gone horribly. Every album Ive ever loved has been made selfishly and for themselves.

its hard for me to see where the break up comes in, just based on everything ive seen. to me, their statement makes it sound like one wanted fame and glory and the band to be the next Coldplay, and the other was fine at the indie level. The fact that they both HAVE ALREADY done the major label thing in previous bands, and that they remained indie with the civil wars this long, begs the question of why either John Paul or Joy would change their minds.
