I wish this album of Metallica's didn't sound so terrible. It's great that they had a return to their roots of Kill 'Em All/The Black Album, while incorporating an updated sound to the production. But...it suffers. The entire mix is way too bright and as a result, the music clips at almost any level. (The same can be said for St. Anger). An ambitious effort 10 albums in, but the production earns it an "F" from me.

But, this is what the box contains, it seems:

Not sure I follow. If you mean that everything in between Black and DM was forgettable, I disagree. I actually think Load/Reload are very good albums. It was a confident, accomplished change of direction for the band. People didn't want them to change, but had they not done so, they'd have been no more relevant than Megadeth or Slayer are today. They created controversy - people talked about the music. And you know what? It was rather good.

But, to further illustrate my point about the suckitude of DM's sound:

A very enlightening read about albums with terribler mastering:
    http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/LoudnessWar

This issue is what has bothered me most with the RHCP's Californication. It's nearly unlistenable because of the hot master.

In short: Be mindful of what you spend your money on. What may look like a good deal, is still money spent on one of the worst mastering jobs put to tape. I'd wait for a remaster.

When they finally do a remaster of Death Magnetic, those of us who bought the first release should get it for free. I only listen to the Guitar Hero 3 version of the album, which sounds great.

I wasn't even aware of the Guitar Hero version at first. I still need to find it to compare. It really brings to light the quality in the remasters of Ten, Vs, and Vitalogy.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think Metallica does a master for Vinyl, at least the last RSD was that.

I'm not sure that you're wrong, but if you'll take some time to read the links I posted, you'll notice that the vinyl rip is nearly the exact same garbage quality as the CD.

It's a very poor-sounding recording. It's as though someone decided to blast music out of their $5 plug and play ipod speakers.

I do remember James talk about the bad sound on ...And Justice For All and that they want the next album (Black, self titled) to be a lot better. They should know better I think, but this time around it's maybe more the high volume that make the sound poor.
