I've never been much of a fan of the genre but I want to check some stuff out. I have Bitches Brew on my iPod and after a few listens I am really enjoying it. So what else is there out there that I should check out?

Coltrane - pretty much anything. Giant Steps and A Love Supreme are good places to start. Don't bother with compilations or greatest hits - everything on his albums is great.

Charles Mingus - Black Saint and the Sinner Lady

Charley Parker (Bird) - probably the greatest saxophonist ever - here you can go with compilations I would say since he wasn't as much of an album artist. But my Parker knowledge is unfortunately shallow.

I like really old Louis Armstrong - like from the 20's. Those songs are on albums called "Hot 5's & 7's". Check out West End Blues.

And of course Kind Of Blue, Miles Davis featuring John Coltrane and Cannonball Adderly.

    Enjoy!

The great thing about Jazz is if you own a turntable, there are TONS of old compilations out there that will have several artists and you can pick the ones you like and go from there.

Miles Davis - Kind of Blue, is THE beginners jazza album.

    Also:

    Dave Brubeck - Time Out
    Herbie Handcock - Maiden Voyage
    Cannonball Adderly - Somethin' Else
Charles Mingus - Mingus Ah Um
    Thelonious Monk - Monk's Dream

They are all pretty much 'must gets' in terms of jazz. Good place to start a collection.

Many great suggestions already. Here are a few more artists to check out that haven't been mentioned yet.

    Duke Ellington
    Cecil Taylor
    David Murray
    Wayne Shorter
    Martial Solal
    Sun Ra

Also check out the jazz books by Gary Giddins. He's arguably the greatest living jazz critic. Start with his book Visions Of Jazz for a look at a variety of artists in one book.

So many names that I'm not the least bit familiar mentioned here

It's going to be fun seeking some of these out at the record store.

Some of the great stuff is quite long too. You have a lot of listening to do!

If you want to try something more modern, check out a Medeski, Martin, & Wood record (although they are much better live than they ever have been recordced)
  • Check out these guys. They live and mostly play around the Atlanta area, but really good.

  • I'd recommend The Bad Plus, put on a great live show!
