Was thinking about how cool it is when a band says, 'Please welcome to the stage....' I love unexpected, awesome surprise guests at shows! Been fortunate to see some pretty cool guests! Who have you seen?

My list:
Gregg Allman, Vusi Mahlasela, Ron Blake, Paquito D'Rivera at DMB
Eleanor Friedberger (Fiery Furnaces) and Dan Boeckner (Wolf Parade) at Spoon
Billy Joel at Paul McCartney
Bob Mould at Foo Fighters

Wasn't even considering openers being brought out during a show, but I should, I've seen some notable ones!! Including Ben Bridwell (Band of Horses) at Pearl Jam, Michael Franti at John Mayer, and Glen Hansard at Eddie Vedder!

I've been pretty fortunate living in L.A. to see quite a few. These are only unannounced special guests (i.e. not openers who came out later with headliner like Ben Harper with PJ, openers at PJ20, etc.) that were a surprise. I probably missed a few, including Morello's second LA Justice Tour show (the first one was absolutely incredible).

Cypress Hill at Rage Against the Machine (9/13/00 Grand Olympic)
Blind Boys of Alabama at Ben Harper (5/27/01 SB Bowl)
John Garcia at Queens of the Stone Age to play Kyuss songs (12/20/05 Wiltern)
Tim Robbins at Pearl Jam (7/9/06 Forum)
The Avengers at Pearl Jam (7/16/06 Bill Graham SF)
Stewart Copeland at Foo Fighters (3/5/08 Forum)
Ben Harper at Eddie Vedder (4/10/08 Arlington)
*Flea, Slash, Perry Farrell, Dave Navarro, Stewart Copeland, Travis Barker, Cypress Hill, Steve Vai, Pete Yorn, Jerry Cantrell, Wayne Kramer, Davey Havok at the Nightwatchman's Justice Tour (4/15/08 Troubadour)
Serj Tankian at The Nightwatchman (12/9/08 El Rey)
Gary Numan at Nine Inch Nails (09/02/09 Palladium)
Jim Carrey at Conan O'Brien's Legally Prohibited Tour (4/25/10 Gibson Amp)
Mark Lanegan at Queens of the Stone Age (8/12/10 Club Nokia) (After he was a regular touring member)
Gwen Stefani & Nikka Costa at Prince (4/30/11 Forum)
Alain Johannes at Chris Cornell (5/5/11 Ford Amp)
Mike McCready at Eddie Vedder (7/6/11 LB Terrace)
Mike McCready at Soundgarden (7/22/11 Forum)
    Chris Cornell at PJ20
Jackson Browne, Tom Morello, Joan Osborne at Ben Harper (9/19/11 The Mint)
Flea, Josh Klinghoffer, Tunde Adebimpe, Kyp Malone at Tinariwen (9/30/11 El Rey)
Fee Waybill at Foo Fighters (10/14/11 Forum)
Tom Morello at Bruce Springsteen (4/26/12 LA Sports Arena)

I think there have been a few more, but these are the ones I can remember off the top of my head:

DMB in Central Park 2003- Warren Haynes came out to play "Cortez the Killer" and "Jimi Thing" with them
Allman Brothers Band at the Beacon, can't remember what year, maybe 2006- Bruce Willis played harmonica, very random
Allman Brothers Band at the Beacon 2011- Phil Lesh, Natalie Cole, David Crosby, Graham Nash all at the same show on several songs
Avett Brothers at PNC Arts Center in NJ 2011- Nicole Atkins
The Strokes at MSG 2011- Elvis Costello sang "Taken for a Fool" with them
Foo Fighters MSG 2011- Bob Mould on "Dear Rosemary" and Joan Jett on "Bad Reputation"
Eddie Vedder Beacon night 1 2011- Neil Finn on "I Got You"!
Pearl Jam MSG night 2, 2008- Ace Frehley on "Black Diamond"

but the absolute craziest thing I've ever seen, Bruce Springsteen came out to sing "People Get Ready" with U2 when I saw them in Philly in 2005, just insane still one of the best concerts I've ever been to :D
"I'm a lucky man to count on both hands the ones I love."

    MSG II - 6/25/2008

I saw Alexi Murdoch bring out Pete Towneshend. There were probably less than 50 people at the show.
This show, another show, a show here and a show there.

I haven't had any "complete surprise they're in the building" type of special guests, but alot of opening/headlining flip-flopping at several of the shows.

All the guest appearance at PJ 20 night 2, which are all really several steps cooler than any of my other stuff.
Nick Lowe came out and played a few with Wilco after opening
Melt Banana guitarist for Lateralus on 07
Tomahawk percussionist for Reflection/Disposition/Triad in 02
Pedal steel player from Beechwood Sparks played on Wiser Time with the Crowes

Coolest one for me would have to be:

Neil Young & Peter Frampton @ Pearl Jam (Vote for Change 2004 in Toledo, Ohio)
  • kwdaleykwdaley Posts: 499
Saw Bowie on his Glass Spider Tour, Peter Frampton was his guitarist.

Bruce Springsteen brought out Wynn and Regine from Arcade Fire for 2 songs (State Trooper and Keep the Car Running). This one was a complete surprise.

Don't know if this counts but Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton together for the encore of their co-headlining tour.

Bon Jovi came out and did Glory Days with Springsteen at an 08 show I saw.

Chris Cornell came out and did Hunger Strike at LA Night 3 in 2009, which was a complete surprise.
Jerry Cantrell came out and played on Alive at the same show, another surprise.
    Chris Cornell at PJ20

Have seen Sleater Kinney, Ben Harper, and Perry Ferrell come out with PJ. An olympic gold medalist Curt Tomasevicz played Yellow Ledbetter with PJ at a show I saw. Tomas Young also came out and Eddie dedicated No More to him.

Liam Finn and Glen Hansard with Eddie.

The main one I remember was Neil Young joining REM and then Bruce Springsteen at the Vote for Change thing in '04

Also Gary Louris of the Jayhawks has joined the Black Crowes a few times when they've played Mpls.

ETA- I forgot at the Rock For Karl benefit which had Soul Asylum, Gear Daddies, Paul Westerberg and Golden Smog play, the big deal was Bob Mould was there and had Grant Hart come out and play a couple songs with him.
