Book recommendations?

Just looking for some book recommendations (fiction). No Hunger Games and no Fifty Shades of Grey! LMAO. I'm a huge history buff but I'm not looking for non-fiction. I've read too much of those. I was going to start with The Help and maybe Sarah's Key...so something along those lines (fiction but with a tie-in to history). Any suggestions?

Thanks!

I read a lot myself and although historical fiction is not at the top of my list, here's an excellent site with what appears to be a very good list of historical fiction. I've seen many copies of most of these books go through our store and have gotten a lot of good feed back on many of these titles:

I loved The Help (the movie, not so much). I just finished Wolf Hall - it's fiction, but about Henry VIII. I thought it was one of the best books I've read in a long time. And it's the first of a trilogy. Her writing is a little odd, it took a while to get used to, but once I did, I couldn't put it down.

I'd say my favorite work of historical fiction (and one of my absolute favorite books, period) is the Kristen Lavransdattar trilogy. It was written in the early 20s by Sigrid Unset, who later won the Nobel Prize for literature. It's set in medieval Norway.

It's a little rough going on the first try, what with all those long Norwegian names, but after I'd gotten a little ways in I couldn't put it down. I've since reread it many times. I've never met anyone else who's read it and sure would like to discuss it sometime.

Just be sure to get the Tiina Nunnelly translation. The older versions are not as well translated.

So you like history but are looking for some fiction?

Try Stephen King's 11/22/63. An English teacher goes back in time to 1958 to try and stop JFK's assasination. A fictional novel based off of real events. And a page-turner to say the least. I couldn't put this book down. It might be one of King's top 5 books.

If you like historical fiction then read Margaret George. She has written some excellent books and I've read her work on Henry VIII, Mary, Queen of Scots, and Cleopatra. Really, really good especially because I am a total history nerd and she's does a pretty good job of integrating historical fact.
Are we getting something out of this all-encompassing trip?
