Tom Petty - Some Recommendations Please....

edited June 2012 in Other Music
Can anyone recommend a few Tom Petty albums to properly "start me off". I own the greatest hits and mojo and after watching the Runnin Down A Dream Doc on TV the other night I'm ridiculously curious and eager to dip my toe a little further into his music

I'm positive I'm going to buy Full Moon Fever coz that seems to have a few I already love but any other suggestions are very welcome, Looking to get about 3 or 4 to begin with

Thanks in advance of any replies.

Definitely get Full Moon Fever. Also Damn The Torpedoes (1979) and Wildflowers (1994) are essential. And then Into The Great Wide Open (1991) which is just as good as Full Moon Fever. Some of the their more underrated but very good albums are Hard Promises, Long After Dark and Southern Accents.

I've been listening to the first album A LOT lately and man that one is good, I like Hard Promises and Damn the Torpedoes a lot also, I REALLY like Louisiana Rain and Shadow of a Doubt (Complex Kid) from Damn the Torpedoes. And as Bronx Bombers mentioned, the Live Anthology is GREAT!

This one is must, wish I had this on vinyl. As a few other of Tom's but very unaffordable for some reason at this time. Full Moon Fever brings back so many memories for me from that time period. I use to listen to this one over and over with a first love that eventually went on to break my heart.

Also, check out She's the One soundtrack. Those are my two favorite studio efforts. Greatest Hits compilation is a good place to get your toes wet. And the semi-recently released Live Anthology is a good career-spanner too.

Check out the B-Side: Girl On LSD. It was originally suppose to be on Wildflowers, but Warner Bros said no, it's a great song.

My recommendation is that anyone in Europe who can, goes to see him on this tour. The band are on fire at the moment. Just travelling home after Cork and Dublin shows.

How was the crowd reception? I'll be seeing them at their first London show. It's amazing they haven't toured Europe in two decades.

Dublin and Cork crowds were both very loud. Good mix of people, uni students right through to people in their 60s. The support, Jonathan Wilson, was quite good too.

Just ordered Wildflowers and All the Rest on vinyl. Looking forward to receiving that! Been in a real Tom
Petty mood this past week. Mainly listening to Best of Everything 1976-2016. Such a diverse range of songs.
