What's happening in Denver...

So I may be taking a trip to Denver in a few weeks (ok accompanying Mr. RK on a business trip)

What is there to do in Denver? Never been there, not sure how long I will be there (I think 3-4 days), or if I will have access to a car-what's traffic like there?

Is there anything exciting to do in a short amount of time? Or should I just skip it?
The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun.

    free hotel? go.

never been, but i've always heard positive things

imo, traffic can't be bad unless you are in LA, chicago, or some of those east coast cities.

  • I've only been there as a visitor, but I recommend driving to Boulder. You can do a simple but beautiful hike in the Flat Irons. Right by CU's campus, you can drive up into the national park and have a beer by the lake at the top a brewery bar (names aren't coming to mind at the moment).

Coors Field is a nice place to see a baseball game if the Rockies are in town.

You could check Red Rocks schedule to see if anyone is playing. It's a bit of a drive but not bad, and there are parks all over the place out there for biking, hiking, and water sports.

Dunno how much time you have but you could catch a Rockies game, visit the Denver Museum of Natural History, go down to LoDo, the restuarant/bar/live music venue area of the city, drive up to Boulder about 40 minutes away after rush hour and hike the Flat Irons, check out the Pearl Street Mall and take a drive up Boulder Canyon. If you have more time, like a full day and a rental car, drive 80 miles west on either I-70 passing through the Eisenhower Tunnel on the Continental Divide and visit the towns of Dillon, Frisco, Breckenridge (1st exit after the tunnel) or continue on on I-70 and visit Vail or take Highway 6 in Golden and drive west along the river and visit the small towns, probably not so small now, of Black Hawk and Idaho Springs, exit I-70 where the hazardous cargo trucks have to and drive over Loveland Pass and drop into Keystone, Frisco and Dillon the "back" way. Leave in the am, go up have lunch and go back to Denver. Visit the Coors brewery in Golden, along the way or wait until you get to the independent breweries in Dillon or Breckenridge. Stop at he peak of Loveland Pass and have your picture taken at the Loveland Pass sign, ski at A-Basin, probably still open and they'll sell you a half day lift ticket and rent you skis. If you have 2 days, drive to Aspen and spend the night just for the spectacle of it in its majestic beauty and the Maroon Bells. If I were you, I'd go as the view from Denver west of the rockies is spectacular, snow capped peaks, unless global climate change has altered the view. But its all good and I didn't even scratch the surface. Its a beautiful state with a lot going on. Be warned, the airport is an hour from downtown out on the plains, not like it used to be when it was Stapleton, which was 20 minutes from downtown and the traffic at rush hour can be brutal. You won't be bored and if its free, why not?

    Peace.
