Germany has had similar problems and even created specific policies to entice their young people to have kids. Although, I don't think lack of interest in sex was the reason for the decline in the German population :o
Are we getting something out of this all-encompassing trip?

Yup, they're not interested in sex anymore. They don't even bother to watch porn..
There's no paparazzi in Japan, but when a famous person/singer has a baby, they try to use that as a marketing technique to have other people 'want' babies.

I think it's because they're thinking about themselves. They want the career, they want have fun, they don't want the responsibility of taking care of a child.

Don't quote me though...i'm not positive with all this information, but it's what I've heard.

Japanese porn is alive and well!

It's not that they are only 'thinking about themselves' in a selfish way, the young ones are under a LOT of pressure to perform at school, at university, etc. The school day is a long, full day where students are 'encouraged' to participate in extra-curricular activities. Then there is the homework after that. Furthermore, not only is the day long, so is the school year - many more days at school than in the US - not that many holidays. Entry to high school is determined by exam as well - so more pressure for younger ones to perform well.

Also, students are more 'supported' by teachers and parents who 'keep them on the right track' (ie focussed on their studies) to enable them to achieve and eventually get a good job.

So I guess it's easily understandable why "36 percent of males between 16 and 19 had "no interest" in sex".

Once they do get a good job, find themselves a partner, settle and think of babies, one needs to understand that the workplace in Japan is not very family friendly, neither are government policies. There are not that many things in place for the working mother, etc. A lot of women will actually stop working once they have a child and, if they go back to work, she will usually be passed up for promotion, etc. It's a society where, until quite recently, most women did stay at home. Now, young women who study and have aspirations need to make a serious choice which women in the US (or any other similar country) don't really have to.

My cousin who married a japanese lady and who loved living in Japan (he had a very good job and a high standard of living) moved back to France because of this. His wife was highly educated and had a good job too and, should they have stayed in Japan, she would have had to make some drastic choice which she was not willing to do. In France, she had a fantastic job, her three children, etc. and was able to balance everything.

I would like to argue here for the fact that many couples choose not to have children because they are responsible. I helped raise two of my nephews and am very close to my other three nephews. I'm currently "Uncle Muddy" to a my step grand niece. I worked with kids when I was a teacher. But I chose not to have kids because I believe over-population is a huge problem in this world. I would be very offended by anyone telling me I am selfish because I didn't have any scratch babies. Please think before you make such an accusation. Thanks.

Remind me to get my assistant to send you a muffin basket.

(and yeah... our culture is very sexualized and we put a lot of emphasis on sex and procreation as a measure of success. In many Asian countries, how physically attractive you are or how big your family is is less important than how successful you are in your career or how much money you have. So young men and women respond to that. Besides... wouldn't watching 20 years of the Powerpuff Girls and The Ring movies make YOU fear having sex and/or children?)

    Here here, too!

Our choice to not have children comes from a place more of self-interest, I suppose, in that we simply love our life, our freedom, our financial state, all as they are; and we...well...frankly, we know we're too selfish to be the kind of parents we would want to be, and should be.

(neices and nephews are wonderful, by the way :P )

Excellent HONEST answer, Hedonist. My reason for not having kids was concern for population numbers and I got to have some parental experience anyway and I also have three Godchildren and would have gladly helped raise them had the need arisen.

But not having kids from self-interest as you say is equally valid. That kind of self awareness is commendable and should also not be subject to criticism either. I wish everyone were that self aware so good job and I hope you are yours are having the good life you wished for!

Thought this was an interesting visual about China's opposite problem of too many babies. It basicallly outlines China's one child policy.
