    This is the problem the Republican Party has created for itself.
    Republican candidates MUST pander to its Christian Right base in order to gain win the Primaries. This means you have to play up the big 3... Abortion, Gays and Christianity. This alienates large segments of the country... which that candidate must win over in order to win in the General Election.
    The Republican party used to be the party that didn't have the nutcase conspiracy theorists... they were mostly Democrats and Libertarians. They choose to cater to the fringe and make them their base and now have to deal with it.
