How to clean a vinyl record?

I dropped by Black Keys record on the carpet - :nono: and now I am getting a ton of cracks and pops on the side that came into contact with my nasty ass carpet at my house. I did some research, online and asked the girl that works at a local record store, and they said wipe it with microfiber cloth, and if necessary, dampen the cloth with alcohol/distilled water mixture. I did those and I still have a ton of crackeling going on... it sounded great before I dropped it... how do I fix this? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Thanks. To really get to the root cause, maybe I should just not drop records in the first place.
I'll try what's listed in that thread. Thanks chadwick
