Rusty Cage

From the Telephantasm booklet: And everyone's still trying to figure out his sense-defying backward interpretation of a Chris Cornell riff to "Rusty Cage". (That song was so cool, even Johnny Cash covered it in 1996).

God I love this song.... the imagery gives me chills. It's brutal, the breakdown towards the end and into the final verse is just awesome.

    You wired me awake
And hit me with a hand of broken nails
You tied my lead and pulled my chain
To watch my blood begin to boil

    But I'm gonna break
    I'm gonna break my
I'm gonna break my rusty cage and run

Too cold to start a fire
I'm burning diesel burning dinosaur bones
I'll take the river down to still water
And ride a pack of dogs

    I'm gonna break
    I'm gonna break my
I'm gonna break my rusty cage and run

Hits like a Phillips head into my brain
It's gonna be too dark to sleep again
Cutting my teeth on bars and rusty chains
I'm gonna break my rusty cage and run

When the forest burns along the road
Like God's eyes in my headlights
When the dogs are looking for their bones
And it's raining icepicks on your steel shore

    I'm gonna break
    I'm gonna break my
I'm gonna break my rusty cage and run

That's the song that got me into Soundgarden when it appeared in the Road Rash video game. If it weren't for Rusty Cage I would not have gotten into Alice in Chains or Pearl Jam. Because of that, I will always love that song. As for Johnny Cash's cover, I gotta say I really like it; the man in black really made it his own while still maintaining the urgency of the original.

i saw audioslave do it on their second tour and i have never seen a crowd go so nuts to an opening riff of a song, the place went insane for it....high fiving strangers at the end, the whole bit.

i got to see soundgarden do it last year, was amazing.....just an incredible song.

I blasted this in the car the other day with the g/f and we were talking about how it is such a definitive song for Soundgarden. The atmosphere, the sound, the intesity and grittiness of the song perfectly reflect what kind of band Soundgarden was at the time of that record's release.

Personally, my favorite Soundgarden song from Soundgarden's magnum opus.

Awesome performance of it at their recent Melbourne show, the crowd went crazy during that slow break down, will never forget that.
