Pink Floyd - Obscured by Clouds

There is no better way to express my love and admiration for Pink Floyd than to say they are second on my list of favorite bands right behind, well, take a guess.

It is obvious that Dark Side, WYWH, and The Wall get all the attention, and deservedly so, but some of their other albums are amazing and unique in their own way. Obscured by Clouds, for me, is one of them, as is Meddle.

Anyone share my sentiments?

    :clap::clap::clap:

Floyd is definitely in my top 3 faves for sure and Obscured by Clouds definitely doesn't get enough love. Free Four is up there as one of my fave Floyd tracks. Meddle is also incredible, as is Animals.

I always feel like I need to get people who've only heard Dark Side or the Wall to dig in deeper!

    "One, two, Free Four!"

"Wot's, uh, the deal" is one of my favorite songs of all-time. Animals is amazing. Why don't these albums get any love?!?!?!

Yeah Obscured By Clouds is great. Free Four and Childhood's End should be played in regular rock radio rotation (as should Fearless and maybe even San Tropez from Meedle). The instrumentals are okay...nothing to write home to mom about...but are short and to the point. The Gold It's In The... is pretty cool too. Like The Nile Song, Young Lust, and Not Now John...it's a "holy shit, Pink Floyd can rock?" type of song.

I think the two of you would get along well - he's a total Floyd completist! In fact, Rick Wright's stuff is his favorite outside of Syd's. RIP!

    from wiki:

released in 1984. Wright later stated that he felt Identity was an "experimental mistake" that should never have been released

Let me know how this works out. I'm running low, so I can't listen to OBC.

It is a great album and the last of the PF that I got into, unless somehow the Syd stuff does pretty much a 180 from where I stand with it now.

Never knew they could rock til I heard The Gold, It's In... and several other more classic sounding Floyd tunes....Stay and Wotsuh the Deal are among my faves on there.

I think overlooked works for me better. In my personal rankings it would still sit behind anything else from the Meddle-The Wall run. It's sorta like Animals in a way. I know alot of people that are pretty big Floyd fans and some of them hadn't really even heard of Animals or Obscured....Once they both got their fair shake they soon found their place among the other great albums these guys put out. They just don't get the hoopla that DSotM, WYWH, and The Wall get.

It kinda got the shaft because of what it is and when it came out. Everyone thinks Meddle was the album before Dark Side, and in a way it is because it is the last true band-based studio album from them before Dark Side. OBS is a movie soundtrack and was approached as such (themes, style, sound). It sort of snuck in there with little fanfare.

Is there a book/article written about the writing/recording process of Animals? It's an interesting album, and I'm sure the writing process/recording was just as interesting, considering its place in between Wish You Were Here and The Wall.

In college, if I had the privilege of having a lady friend in my room/apt, and if we were enjoying some "green," I would frequently insist on listening to Meddle. Conventional wisdom would say Al Green or Craig Mack or Seal, but I chose Meddle.
Needless to say, Echoes was always interesting. Who the f*#k wants to be conventional anyway?

Sounds conventional to me. You should be back to listening sometime during the 1st verse.
  • IMO the best PF Album has to be Animals, it has some of David Gilmours best guitar work on it (Dogs) and whilst i love DSOTM and WYWH i think animals is the true last of the Pink Floyd sound. Recently i got myself a copy of Les Claypools Frog Brigade cover of the whole Animals album, and note for note its a perfect copy. Plus the solo from Dogs was the first solo i ever learnt to play.

What he said. My favourite Floyd album by quite a long way, and Pigs on the Wing (pt1) was the first Floyd song I could play!
