Van Halen/DLR

I went to see Van Halen with a bunch of guys from the office here in Nashville this weekend.

I have two observations: (a) Eddie Van Halen is a one-of-a-kind virtuoso, (b) David Lee Roth is a worthless turd of a singer and an even more despicable human being.

Eddie is apparently sober and was totally in his element. His 10 minute guitar solo was incandescent. In my opinion, hands down the best guitar player of our lifetimes (sorry Mike).

David Lee Roth put forth the worst performance from any lead singer I have ever seen. Utterly out of key when he tried to sing (although he spoke most of the lyrics that he remembered or didn't change to suit his own whims), a repellent clown whose act wore thin three decades ago and hasn't gotten any more charming since. Roth makes Sammy Hagar look like Otis Redding by comparison.

DLR is indeed a douchebag prima donna. Have you seen this?

I saw them at Verizon Center last month and thought Roth was horrible. I saw him solo around 2000, and he put on a good show, and I got to see him sing the VH tunes I wanted to hear. His voice on this tour has been terrible. If not for EVH and WVH "backing" him on vocals, he would have gotten about 15% of them correct or in key...

    It's a shame... I love 70's VH.

I was there too. I told myself going into it that at this stage of his career, Dave's more showman than actual lead singer. And I accept that - he brings his own insane personality and antics to the show, which is a hell of a lot more than I can say for his replacement. I found him tolerable.

The three others are in top form; Wolfie's turned into a more than able replacement for Anthony, and Eddie's absolutely killing it out there. I think everyone who's witnessed the solo near the end of the show has been blown away, as was echoed earlier. Of course Dave could be a lot better, but I guess he's still Dave at the end of the day, and I wouldn't want anyone else fronting the band.

I think the blower thing is a lame attempt at developing a schtick; he brought it up in DC too, and I think he's done it at other venues. If not, heaven help the poor guy who forgets to remove all the brown M&Ms from the bowl!
