Brad, Live at the Showbox 4/27/12
Brad. A band that I feel like I’ve been listening to for years but in reality for only a couple of months. Yes, I know, I am late on the Brad train and I don’t really know the reason for that. But after a friend told me to give them another listen, I was hooked. Around that same time Brad had announced a new album plus a small tour and I knew I had to go. After getting tickets for the Showbox show in April I was pumped to see them. Of course, weeks before the show I got sick but I got lucky and got better before the show and before the Record Store Day concert. That performance was a sampler of what was to come, plus I got my United We Stand vinyl signed by the band and I got a picture with Stone and Shawn.
The day of the concert I was so pumped to see them and couldn’t wait any longer. Once my dad and I got down to the Showbox I met some very awesome people. I got the pleasure to meet Leyna (Who picked me up an EV RSD vinyl) and Tammi, a friend from Seattle. I also got to see my good buddy Marcus, who was kind enough to save me a spot up front by the stage. And by upfront I mean really upfront, couldn’t get any closer if I wanted to! I was pretty much in the middle; I had a great view of all of the band members. Time seemed to go so slow once the first two opening bands came up and played. Well, the first person was just himself and an acoustic guitar who sounded like he was trying too hard to be talented. Second band wasn’t too bad, definitely had a better singer and they had a fog machine and a lights show. I mean come on; you can’t beat a fog machine.
As the band left the stage and Brad starting making their way to the stage my heart was racing. It was so great to be able to see the band member so close! Shawn lifted up he little daughter to show the crowd before breaking into “Water Deeps.” All I can say about that song is it just ROCKS live! I mean it sounds great on my iPod but it doesn’t compare to Shawn belting the song right in front of your face. After playing “Last Bastion” from the new album they started playing “Diamond Blues”, my favorite song from the new album. Shawn was a little off lyric wise for that song so it was really funny to see the reaction from Happy who was trying to sing along with Shawn. Not to mention Stone really just rocked out the solo at the end; so much his glasses fell off! The next two songs were fantastic to hear, the rocker “Tea Bag” and “The Only Way” from their latest album. Shawn had spot on vocals on “The Only Way” and really got into “Tea Bag.” After a nice performance “Price of Love” Shawn hopped up to the keyboard and the band played another one of my favorites from the new album, “A Reason to be in my Skin.”
Then they surprised me by playing one of my favorites from Interiors, “Lift.” Regan was killing it on the drums and Happy sounded great on the back up vocals. After, they surprised me again by playing a rockin’ version of “Sweet Al George” which is better life then it is on the album. “Come sweet emotion!” “Miles of Rope” came next which I was so happy to hear because nothing beats the “Oh man, oh man, oh man. Thank you!” by the very joyful Shawn Smith. Stone grabbed an acoustic guitar while the band played “Make the Pain go away” which is my second favorite song from the new album. The song, lyric wise and music wise is just so beautiful and I was so happy to be able to see that gem played live, it was an honor. Then Shawn headed over to the keyboard again to play one of his solo songs, “Wrapped Around my Memories” with the whole band which sounded really great to hear the full band on it.
Next came the funkiness of “20th Century” and “Nadine” which sounded amazing with the barefooted Keith Lowe letting loose on the bass. Next was the ever so awesome “Every Whisper” which one of my favorite from Best Friends? Shawn really shinned on that song. At this point I thought the show couldn’t get any better but the minute I heard the opening riff to “Secret Girl” I started jumping. And I jumped the whole song. That is one of my favorite Brad songs and during the song the band was on fire! A sure highlight for me! After the encore Shawn come back on stage to do an unforgettable performance of Purple Rain and Crown of Thorns. With the strobe lights on the ceiling, the sound of the piano and the emotion behind Shawn’s voice, it was enough to give me pure chills. It will be a moment I will never forget!
After that amazing combination the band came on back band and preformed a fantastic version of Neil Young’s “Don’t Cry” Keith got so into the song he also had his glasses fall from his face! Then Shawn got back on the keyboard to perform “Screen” which also was a highlight for me. Everything sounded spot on, especially after the “Sha na na!”, the band really rocked the song with a rockin’ solo from Stone and Happy while Regan was just nailing the drums! The band brought it back down for “Buttercup” which could bring tears to anyone’s eyes. The music with Shawn’s amazing voice made the song really nothing but short of fantastic. Then came the end of the show which was the best moment for me because the band played my favorite song from them, “The Day Bring.” Everything was perfect for that song, the piano, the rockin’ drums, the sly bass and the solos from Happy and Stone. And as Keith showered Shawn with confetti I realized that I had witness of the best concert I have ever seen. Overall the band was on fire, they really looked like they were having fun and the setlist was amazing! I had such a great time with my dad and Marcus. Thanks everyone for reading my lengthy review, until next show!
