Question about white backspacer LP

Not sure what board this sort of thing goes on.. so, I apologize if this belongs somewhere else. I've learned that posting on lost dogs bring about a tough crowd. Anyway, last year I was able to get a backspacer white vinyl from 10C. I don't own much vinyl, other than what came with the ten & Vs/Vitalogy deluxe box sets and the backspacer limited edition white. But I am starting to collect some and diversify a little, but I don't really know much about collecting yet. Today I actually just bought the Pro-Ject debut III for my first turntable. Plan to use it tomorrow. Would you recommend I leave the white vinyl sealed? I'm not rich by any means, but I could easily afford just to buy the regular backspacer LP and play that one... Then on the other hand, the white backspacer is something I will never sell...so maybe I should just play it!? Any thoughts on that are appreciated. Also, can anyone offer up some good advice for someone like myself who is just starting to get into this? Thanks guys.

What's the point of keeping it closed? I opened my white vinyl and have played it many times.

You have the right to sell it by all means, but if you're never going to sell it, then why leave it sealed?

Like with many things, there are more than one reason to own things.

You don't own a rare and valuable stamp to post it.
You don't own a rare and valuable coin to put it in the candy dispenser.
You don't own a rare and valuable record to spin it. (with a caveat)

I find the value in spinning a record worth throwing the collector value out the window in general. A good example would be Benaroya Hall.

If you own that on vinyl and don't spin it, it seems like a shame.

But when there is a $20.00 alternative to the White Backspacer available, then it seems stupid to spin the White one.

It was made as a collectors item. It was made to retain value, otherwise they would just put them all out on Black.

So, yeah, keep it sealed, spring for a black one and you get everything you want and more.

And if you do open and spin the White one. It will bring you plenty of joy, so not a bad 2nd option. IMO.

Agree with Wilds - as you can afford to spring for a standard version keep the White Backspacer sealed.

You never know, one day you may need the $. And if you don't, well you'll still have a sweet rare & collectable item to hold onto.

My advice on collecting vinyl - only pay what its worth to you.

Yes the records sound better on vinyl and its great to have the sleeve artwork but at the end of the day its not life changing and its real easy to get sucked into paying a lot for them (especially on the 'bay).

Anyways welcome to the club - and the addiction only ever gets stronger :D

Thanks for the advice guys. Only because there is a 20 dollar alternative, I will keep the white one sealed and just buy a black backspacer. That seems to make the most sense to me. I am quickly learning that there are "scalpers" for limited release vinyls. Sorta felt like I was buying EV solo tickets. I did the whole RSD thing for the first time yesterday and they sold out of EV just before I got there (in line for 2.5 hrs) only to find that there are a ton on ebay now. What a shame. I was actually at the Minneapolis show and those two songs were pretty special. I hate to support people scalping vinyl, but I think I want that one bad enough... And you guys are right, its easy to get sucked into this stuff!

When you post the stamp...it's gone. When you spend the coin...it's gone. When you spin the record, that you're not going to sell. It's still there, and it's still collectible.

If you can afford it and are unsure whether you want to open your white one, just buy a black one and spin that. :D Whatever you decide to do with it, open, keep sealed, spin, not spin, frame... it's yours to do whatever you wish and don't let anyone here tell you otherwise.

I have mixed feelings about this myself. If you keep it sealed it will retain its value. But on the other hand, a sealed white is identical looking to a sealed black. If you choose to sell the sealed white later, you will have to find someone who will trust that it is indeed white.
Personally, If I were buying one, Id want to buy an opened mint condition one.

Those are just examples wilds used...yeah you found a "loophole" in his examples but its not difficult to see his logic. What about those that buy tons of posters just to leave them in tubes, flat files, or portfolios. They can't be viewed or enjoyed. I know I have a few posters in my portfolio I rarely browse through. Or those that collect CD ,singles, DVDs, tapes, etc. Why buy pj20 beer if not to drink it? I have a few unopened bottles left I probably won't ever open. Why track down the jack daniels bottles and not take a few shots of whiskey? Wilds is simply saying there are many reasons to collect, and not just limited to its intended purpose.

I believe if you are the lucky few that have an unopened Benny, keep it sealed. With only 2000 produced, the number of sealed Benny's dwindle as time passes. Why open a valuable collectible? If you are determined to listen to it, sell ur sealed one and buy an open one. Use the leftover cash as you please - donate it or buy other pj collectibles.

Right, but you're only protecting the trade/resale value.

If you're not going to trade or resell, then the trade/resale value is implicitly zilch.

So in the circumstances of non-resale vinyl, playing isn't going to do any damage as a collectible.

It all depends on the owner's priorities. I've started thinning out my poster collection and selling off posters I know aren't unique enough to hold on to. I had to tear off the shrink wrap from my Benaroya Hall LPs so the band members could sign the cover. I figured it was worth the trade-off. As for the Jack Daniels Vitalogy promo I recently acquired, I'm certainly not opening those little bottles any time soon.

But who can say with 100% certainty they will never move or sell something? Have you seen some of the signed rarities that have recently been up for sale?

And I'll admit it, I find personal satisfaction in owning something that is valuable.
