Very disapointed by sound quality of New York MSG 2 2010 bootleg :(
Is this the same for all 2010 bootlegs ?
2009 boots have better sound quality and 2011 boots are just great !

I really liked the 2010 bootleg sound. Seemed to be able to hear the crowd more than other years. Some listeners don't like that though, Knut I think it adds to the atmosphere. At least we have bootlegs to re-live though.

Unfortunately, I have to disagree. The London boot, for example, is one of my favorites but it would be even better if you could hear Eddie singing. Listen to the outro of Porch, he's barely audible.

Canadian boots 2011 got it right..

Then SA 2011 boots buried Mikey's guitar..?

    Arrrrrgh!

Who's in charge at the mixing board?

  • Was just listening to MSG 1 from 2010 and thought the sound quality was remarkably bad, so I came on here to see if anyone else thought the same. Yikes. Sounds like WAY too much audience in the mix. Felt almost like an audience-sourced bootleg.

Does anyone know why this was the case? Why the mixing on the bootlegs sounds so different from year to year? I'm not talking about the instruments sounding different -- that the mixing is so different.

My guess is they took notice of how many people were disappointed with the mix of the 2010 bootlegs and had the last two tours really well mixed. Just a hunch. IMHO, the 2010 boot audio mix was really not that bad. It sure was a hell of a lot better than 2008, and about on par with 2009. The Bristow 2010 boot sounds quite nice for a live recording. Sure, they were not EQ'ed a lot like 2011 (which almost sounds a bit overproduced at times), but I love being able to hear the audience that well. Someone once said on here that the 2010 boots basically had the audience mixed in as a band member on the 2010 boots; meaning the crowd is mixed evenly with the band.

2000 Euro tour and 2012 have my personal favorite bootleg mixes. 2000 Euro are very crisp and clean. 2012 packs the most punch without being muddy or too bassy.

As far as from year to year before 2010, I'm sure some of it has to do with Brett not mixing the boots for a while. I think John Burton mixed the boots from 2008-2010. Someone may have to correct me on this.

That's so funny -- I can't stand having the audience mixed up to a level close to the band. I wanna hear the band! And I think 2000 boots are really hampered by the lack of bass. Just shows you we can love the same band and still have such different personal preferences.

Cheers to that. Yeah, I'm usually NOT one to say I want the audience to be more prominent on the boots, but it hits its peak for me on 2010, any louder and I suppose I would have issues.

As far as the lack of bass, it seems to be a common concern for most when it comes to Euro 2000. I can still hear Jeff at least half the time, if not more. Sure, he's a bit low in the mix but it is still audible and his tone is really clear yet warm. If you're listening to those boots on a really cheap stereo or bad headphones, like the one's that come with ipods, then they are gonna sound terrible (not saying that's how you're listening to them ;) ), but I'm sure a large portion of fans have.

The 2010 boots are better than 2008 and 2009 by far. But nothing comes close to the 2011 and 2012 boots with sound quality. The 2012 boots really are something else and the mixing and quality is superb.

I totally agree though - the boot for MSG 2 2010 really doesn't do anything for that show. I've heard nothing but awesome things about the energy and the crowd for that show and that boot does not capture it whatsoever.

I agree with two parts here. First, you are right about the 2012 boots. As much criticism was going around about how awful the 2008-2010 boots sounded, there should have been dozens of threads praising the 2012 boots and most of the 2011 boots as well. Second, although I think MSG II 10 is a really great boot it is actually very overrated. There were several other shows from 2010 that were just as good and the boots sound quite a bit better (go figure even during the same tour boots sound different all the time).

From one who went to Music Midtown to another, I have a couple of questions. First, how did you think it compared to Bristow 2010 (since we were both there as well ;) ). Second, is it just me or does the Atlanta '12 bootleg sound really damn good? Matt's drums have never sounded more full, bright, and punchy.

Btw, I believe I read somewhere on here that you were on the rail at ATL on Mike's side? If so, we had to be really close to one another. The group around my girlfriend and I were really nice. 8-) We were on the rail on Mike's side as well.

Even though Bristow is a show that is very near and dear to my heart for many reasons, the Atlanta boot is better in my opinion. There is just something crisp about these 2012 boots The Bristow boot gets severely overlooked, I think, for the set list and because it's "Bristow" and was the show before the North East run of shows, which get a ton of publicity around here. If anyone takes a look at that set, they will understand that it really was a unique set list. Don't you remember Ed saying at one point during the show "Oh, I get it. Is that the kind of shit you're into tonight - the weird stuff (after All Those Yesterdays)? We're gonna play this next one (Black) that you all know, but we're gonna start fucking it up after that I think." The Atlanta bootleg, in my opinion and not to sound biased, I think sounds the best of all the 2012 boots. And I have and have listened to all the 2012 boots. You're right, Matt's drums punched crisp, Ed sounded great that night - especially after a show and travel from the night before, and Mike was absolutely on fire, and the energy level from the band as a whole was top notch. All of this is delivered on the boot.

Yeah man, I was on the rail DIRECTLY in front of Mike! No joke, right in front of his mic! My buddy and I went straight from the airport to the park to wait in line to get that spot and put our bodies through a tremendous amount of pain. Caught one of Mike's picks (dropped probably about 5 others), got at least 3 thumbs up from Mike throughout the show, got a point from Mike before he went into a solo (wish I could remember what song). Probably the most memorable moments of the night, however, was when the guys first came out on stage before lacing into Why Go and I screamed at Matt so he noticed me, and all I did was give him the point. He got this big cheese ass grin on his face and pointed right back at me.

 I almost forgot - I was able to check off an item on my bucket list from the Atlanta show. You can hear me clearly on the bootleg. After Animal when Ed is addressing the crowd for the first time, he compliments Florence And The Machine and if you listen closely, you can hear someone clearly scream "McCREADY!!!!!!!". Lol, that was me. I screamed it numerous times throughout the night.

Just from a drummers perspective.....Matts Drums on the 2011-2012 sound awesome...I think some of it has to do with him changing his kit. They got the snare perfect too on most of the 2012 boots.

I also have to agree that the 2008 boots sound pretty bad. Most of the 09-10 boots sound pretty good, the venues also have alittle bit to do with it too

2003 and 2005 boots I think are some of the best along with 2011 and 2012

Great memories, man. We were down to the left of you on the rail. Too bad we didn't get to meet one another. My girl and I were able to get 2 picks, one from Mike, one from Ed. Got to slap Mike's hand during Florence and the Machine when Mike came out to shoot some pics of the band. That was the start of a beautiful night in ATL. As Ed said at the show, there were great vibes and weather with that beautiful city backdrop. I read on here before where someone was deciding which show to go to between Deluna and Music Midtown and chose Deluna because they already live in the city and thought it would be better to be at the beach. While I wish I could have went to both, I have been to a couple of beaches throughout my life but hardly ever do I get nice trips to big cities. My girlfriend and I loved what little we got to see and feel for ATL. Not to mention, Deluna did not have Garbage in their lineup, and they kicked my ass. They were phenomenal.

I agree, ATL was better than Bristow (not by a long shot, but a more solid show). The crowd was far more lively and respectful at Music Midtown in comparison to Bristow. The band were slightly tighter and more "on" at ATL, but still gave a very respectable and professional performance at Bristow. All in all, Bristow does not get the fair share of love it deserved. I think you're right, a lot of it has to do with it being a "Bristow" show and not a north east show, or DC proper. That is a damn shame and had that setlist been played at Buffalo, NY it would be considered one of the best boots of 2010. I wish the crowd at Bristow would have been more consistent though and that's my only complaint. At some points of the show the crowd sounds dead (right before Faithfull when Ed comments how quiet we were). Other times we were quite loud and Ed seemed to noticed and appreciate it (Small Town opener, Betterman). I went to a couple of shows that year in the Jiffy Lube venue and I didn't have any trouble with the parking or even the sound.

Like you, my friend, I can hear myself on the boot. I'm pretty sure I've heard you on the boot! Right before Amongst the Waves when Ed says, "That's right, men can love men" if you listen closely in your left ear (with headphones) you can hear "You're Damn Right!" Good times. :D

It would be a hard sell for anyone to say Matt's drums could sound any better on a live recording than what we received with 2012. I totally agree. I am curious though, generally people praise the 2003 boot sound quality like you have, but rarely do they praise the 2005 boot sound quality/mix. I personally think it is solid, but very unremarkable. Matt's snare is a bit hollow and ringing more than usual. Basically, it's a natural, raw snare tone that most people would not enjoy. The snare doesn't bother me, but the cymbals (his crashes mostly) are a bit shrill and way too damn loud in the mix.

Still, I will always stand by the notion that while the 2003 boots may be more "pleasing" to the ear, they do not have the clarity of the 2005 boots. Matt's drums are way too low in the mix on the US 2000 tour and most of the 2003 tour. My two cents from a drummer's view. 8-)

My ranking of Matt's drum tones and mix on the official boots from best to least impressive (none really sound bad except 2008):
    2012
2011 (South America shows had a slightly better/thicker drum tone in comparison to Canada)
    2000 Euro
    2006
    2000 US
    2010
2003 (similar through the whole tour, slightly different sounding in the Australian shows and Japan)
    2009
    2005

.....2008, sounds like he is hitting a wet log instead of a snare.

BTW, since we are discussing ATL and being up on the rail at Mike's side. Can you see yourself in this really cool picture?

My girl and I were the only ones who were not aware they were taking a picture. I don't know what we were looking at, but I have my damn tongue sticking out from my lips like an idiot and she looks dazed and confused. I have a gray PJ shirt on with the saw blade and hers is dark blue. Hard to miss us, we look hilarious. It's embarrassing really, I second guessed even putting this pic up.

Absolutely hilarious man! I am literally 6 people down from you to your right. I'm the dude wearing the tan Stones shirt and a visor looking into the camera with a dazed and "my body is in fucking pain right now" look on my face.

What a night. I've been extremely lucky with PJ shows thus far - my buddy and I won lottery 9th row front and center at Alpine on Night 1 and were rail right in front of Mike here in Atanta. My buddy who flew in for the show with me called Why Go as the opener - which was fucking awesome by the way. Such a high energy show, loved the opening 3 songs lacing into Why Go > Save You > Animal. No joke, I had already lost my voice and it was gone after Animal.

I see you bud. Well, at least you don't look anywhere near as foolish as I do  . I had a feeling Why Go would open, especially since they played Interstellar into Corduroy after Oceans in Deluna. It was most likely the best way to open the show, I doubt any other song would have worked for the crowd any better (even Go). People can bitch about the setlist by what they see only on paper and haven't even listened to the boot, but Ed did well crafting a set that held the attention and energy a large audience of, I'm sure, casual fans. He almost lost them with Know Your Rights (which my girl had only heard maybe once or twice and she loved it!), but that was the only moment. Not to mention, I thank Ed for not being too predicable and making the set less respectable and more standard; no Last Kiss (marked off last minute), Just Breathe, or Daughter.

Yeah, the first three songs clearly had the most potency of the whole show. I was afraid that Stone's guitar rig dying right before the interlude of Why Go would really hurt the song on the bootleg, but it didn't. I didn't even hear it die or fade at the show, I just saw he was having some issues. It wasn't until I came home and read reviews that I found out the rig had basically died. I think Jeff's bass kept the song sounding full and I believe they may have turned his volume up when they saw Stone was having issues, at least it kind of sounds that way on the boot. What's your thoughts on Save You from ATL? At the show I knew Ed came in late, but at least he started the first verse correctly lyrical wise. He had to improvise on a very small portion of the lyrics after, but even at the show it didn't feel like a major screw up. It is easily the least tight song on the entire show and the only true noticeable at all mess up (except for the slight pop in Ed's voice towards the end of Small Town, but that's just me being too critical :))

LOL - dude I guarantee we probably HAD to exchange some high fives during this show! I was high fiving everyone within a 2 foot radius of me all night long!

I remember the pain of standing there all day really hitting me during Ludacris and just wanting everyone to get the fuck off the stage and get to PJ. Garbage was the best opening act out of everyone by far though.

Highlight of the night for sure was the opening three songs and the energy at it's best. They killed it that night - absolutely rocked 67,000 people. I remember yelling at everyone beside me all night how they were on fire. Such a great night in a great city that I wish I could've explored more, was such a short weekend.

Yeah I remember seeing Stone having some issues with his rig during Why Go and I could tell it was a bit lacking during the show, but that Why Go was electric. When they first started blistering into the opening notes the electricity in the crowd was nuts. I hear you on the set list, and I was fully expecting the festival type of set - which was Ed doing what he does best, knowing who they're playing for and creating the best set list for it. You could definitely tell they were rushing through as many songs as possible though, knowing they only had 2 hours of stage time. They playe 27 songs in 2 hours! The encores were hardly even 5 minutes of a break. I'm not the biggest fan of Rearviewmirror, but that was one of the better performances of that song in recent memory I thought.

Next time I listen to the boot I'll be sure to listen before Amongst The Waves the dude in the crowd "You're damn right!"

Wasnt this thread about quality of 2010 bootlegs? You guys are soon going to find long lost cousin with each other. :)
Going back to the original theme, I am a fan of MSG 2010 bootlegs. Especially MSG 1, the setlist drives me crazy, it is my so called "go to" bootleg. I never thought there was a problem with sound of quality, but I dont count myself any expert on this. I hope this sound quality problem for you doesnt distort completely the pleasure of listening them. FOr me, both these MSG 2010 are like, PJ is teaching how to make live music.

Is this the same for all 2010 bootlegs ?
2009 boots have better sound quality and 2011 boots are just great !
