Tinariwen is a band of Tuareg-Berber musicians from the Sahara Desert region of northern Mali. The band was formed around 1979 in refugee camps in Libya but returned to Mali after a cease-fire in the 1990s.

These guys create some very, very accessible blues/rock inspired world music. Specifically a genre of music called African blues.

Their first album was released in 2001. They have a total of 5 records with their latest being released in 2011. It is my guess that this would've been a huge inspiration to the guys who took part in the Three Fish albums.

Ms. dc and I have tickets to see them in June at The State Room here in Salt Lake City. I'm actually really looking forward to this show... it'll be something very different than what I normally experience in terms of live music.

Here are a couple of videos/songs of theirs:

They are a fantastic live band. You will leave wanting to see them again. I've only seen them once, but can't wait for the chance to do so again.

They are playing London soon, unfortunately I can't make it. I first discovered this kind of music many, many years ago with Ali Farka first album. Was going past a record shop in the african neighbourhood of Brussels and heard him. Went in, asked who it was and bought the album. Everytime I go back, I ask the guy - 'papa' - to suggest an album or two. Discovered quite a bit of music that way, eg Zap Mama (Marie Daulne).

That's cool that you've known about them for so long. I really like the music I've heard from them so far. Wish I would've found them sooner, but better late than never.

Thanks for starting this thread. This band is superb. I'm going to see the Brooklyn show in June (my first time seeing them) and can't wait.

  • I saw them play in dublin the week before last and they were fantastic! Full of energy, it was a fully seated gig which was hard but people just got up and srarted dancing......definitely recommended!
