THAT song's LYRICS are just plain CLASSIC!
Begin the day with a friendly voice,
A companion unobtrusive
Plays the song that's so elusive
And the magic music makes your morning mood.
Off on your way, hit the open road,
There is magic at your fingers
For the Spirit ever lingers,
Undemanding contact in your happy solitude.
Invisible airwaves crackle with life
Bright antenna bristle with the energy
Emotional feedback on timeless wavelength
Bearing a gift beyond price, almost free
All this machinery making modern music
Can still be open-hearted.
Not so coldly charted, it's really just a question
Of your honesty, yeah, your honesty.
One likes to believe in the freedom of music,
But glittering prizes and endless compromises
Shatter the illusion of integrity.
For the words of the profits were written on the studio wall,
Concert hall
And echoes with the sounds of salesmen.
Rush drummer and lyricist Neil Peart explained this song in an interview with Billboard magazine:
"The Spirit of Radio was actually written as a tribute to all that was good about radio, celebrating my appreciation of magical moments I'd had since childhood, of hearing 'the right song at the right time.' However, [the song's] celebration of the ideals of radio necessarily seemed like an attack on the reality - on the formulaic, mercenary programming of most radio stations, with music the last of anyone's concerns. And yes, it was really ironic that such a song became popular on radio, though it was a kind of litmus test. Some radio guys who 'got it' could hear the song and think, 'That's the way it ought to be,' while others - the shallow, swaggering salesmen-of-the-air - could be oblivious to the song's meaning and proudly applaud themselves, 'That's about me!

Thank you for that end piece! I love Neil's comments - they remind me much of Tom Petty's lyrics for The Last DJ.
And, Neil himself. Talented (seems an understated term ) and humble man.
I used to be a diehard member of the Moon-is-THE-best-drummer camp until I was shown the error of my ways by the man I live with.
pffft, he said. Look at this one and see.
And so I did.
Now I'm a believer0 -

Your comments and post make me smileand Neil has to be in the top ten drummers of all time. I'll never say he's the best but he's up there sure especially since he's the principle lyrical writer for the band
I love this unusual example of his drum playing and the stick toss,

goingtoverona wrote:happy 420 everyone. as fun as it is to celebrate, it should also be acknowledged that our government is still declaring war on us for what we choose to put in out bodies.

i'm betting that jefferson quote is spurious.
it's unreal how many of the "good" quotes by "thomas jefferson" actually aren't.
and happy belated pot day to all the heads out there.
although, myself, i finally managed to quit after WAY too long.
it was just time.If I was to smile and I held out my hand
If I opened it now would you not understand?0 -
