I love movies, but often grow tired of Hollywood. There's a lot of good movies from around the world, that people in North America have never come across. I'm always in the mood for good, creative films, and I'm sure this is a good place to get some recommendations. What are everyone's favourite non-American films?

Here are some of my top picks:

Canada
Incendies (2010) The Rocket: The Maurice Richard Story (2005)
France
Le Pacte des Loups (2001) Micmacs (2009) Delicatessen (1991) Ridicule (1996)
Sweeden
Let the Right One In (2008) Frostbiten (2006) Ondskan (2003) The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (2009)
Norway
Troll Hunter (2010) Dead Snow (2009) Rovdyr (2008)
Denmark
    Hævnen (2010)
Japan
    Battle Royale (2000) Kagemusha (1980)
Spain
    [REC] (2007) [REC]2 (2009)
Georgia
    13 Tzameti (2005)
Up next:
(Japan) Battlefield Baseball (Greece) Kynodontas (France) Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain (2001)

  • Watch anything from Michael Haneke and you will not be disappointed.
Go listen to John Frusciante right now!

I just checked him out on IMDB and I like the description of his movies. I'll add Le Temps du Loup and The White Ribbon to my list. Thanks!
  • I would suggest 'Funny Games' and 'Cache', those are amazing.

Oh man, funny games is intense. There are two versions I must add, one Austrian and one american. The American is the remake but Haneke remade them himself. I've only seen the original. The White Ribbon is awesome but its very slow and its premice will be lost on most people.

    Amelie
    Cinema Paradiso
    Oldboy
    City of God
    Seven Samurai
    Ichi the Killer
    Angel-A
    La Haine
    Pans Labyrinth
    Amores Perros

Depends what you are into of course.

I've actually seen these ones, but somehow forgot to list them. I was reading up on Funny Games and it does look pretty good, and my type of film, so that's a definite one I'll watch. I'll have to look up some of those others you mentioned.

    Did you ever watch Kynodontas?
    I loved it.

    I would also recommend:

The City of Lost Children- Same guys that did Delicatessen and Amelie

The Good, The Bad, The Weird- Korean Western...Good stuff

La Maison en Petits Cubes- French Animated short

That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

Let me know what ya think! :D

City of Lost Children is good (it's a french film but stars Ron Perlman) but it's not as good as Delicatessen or Amelie.

The Good, The Bad and The Weird is great fun.

I haven't heard of the last one.

I watched this not long ago:

    Pretty good, worth a watch.

Everything from Studio Ghibli, basically. Especially Hayao Miyazaki's films and Isao Takahata's Grave of The Fireflies
115 bucks for half a haircut by a novice? I want my money back!

    Totally agree.

I watched Grave of the Fireflies a couple of weeks ago. I loved it.

    Porco rosso is my favourite.

I thought Miyazaki was a given. :ugeek:

Here's a link for La Maison en Petits Cubes. Apparently I was wrong about it's origins. It's Japanese.

    It's worth the watch.

4 months 3 weeks and 2 days a romanian film is brutal.

Gaspar noe's films are unreal. Those will change your perspective on life and reality. Irreversible and Enter the Void. Kind of makes any other film meaningless in a way. So well done.

Seems to me world cinema is damn good at horror films. And south korean directors seem to have a real handle on crime movies and thrillers. Mother is an example.
