Billy Talent

For the most part, I don't like the current state of Canadian radio rock. Nickelback, Theory of a Deadman, Sum 41, Our Lady Peace, all that stuff. I don't even listen to the radio anymore because of it (even Ian Thornley's new album under the Big Wreck moniker disappointed me).

But for some reason Billy Talent seems different to me. No, I'm not a huge fan of their ballads, like Rusted In The Rain, but man, their first album under the name Pezz (where the secret song is a super fuzzed out high speed punk version of the Tragically Hip's New Orleans Is Sinking) and their self titled debut are incredible in their intensity. The second album goes a bit wayward towards radio, but I'm hoping their third (which has been out a long time but I'm just getting into them so I haven't listened to yet) is a return to form.

I saw them play at the Junos in Winnipeg in 2005 I think it was, and it was awesome. Of course this is another band I catch onto too late to catch them in a club, but whatever.

I really like them, great live band too. They got a bit of an mtv crowd when red flag was released as a single (back in 2006 if I remember correctly), but I saw them again in 2010 and that part of their following seems to have ditched them, which is not a bad thing.
I think album 4 is due to come out sometime this year, will be interesting to see what it sounds like...would prefer something a bit more raw sounding as well.
  • I just read that their new album will be called "X", and is due in July, and the guitarist says it harkens back to the days of yore (Billy Talent 1). I hate when bands say that. But I'll take a listen.

i don't think it's going to be called X.... they're joking about "numbers" as titles all the time. last thing i heard was them joking about naming it V so people would be confused because there's no IV.
and the only thing i heard about it is that it is supposed to have "the energy" of 1 but still is something completely new...so i don't think it will be like another 1 or something like that.....
there's a lot being said before the release of a new album so i think everyone should just wait for it.

i just saw a definitive confirmation that the album is not going to be called X.. they don't have a name yet (but an idea), but it's not going to be IV, V, X or any other number.. :-D

haha yeah, ian's hair is awesome!

I don't think I've ever listened to Billy Talent, but I've got a cool story about the band.

A few years ago they were recording in Los Angeles with Brendan O'Brian. I had listed the Pearl Jam Soundgarden Kozik Green Lady for sale and Ian D'Sa was the highest bidder.

He came by my house to pay and pick it up. Really cool guy and claimed to be a huge Pearl Jam fan.

  • That is a cool story!

I saw them not too sure of what to expect... but have to say that I thought they were pretty good. I'm not sure how long the lead guy will be able to scream as he does- throat's eventually gonna say, "Fak off!"
    "My brain's a good brain!"

    I am one of those
    kinda-there fans
that can appreciate a song or two
when it comes on the radio.
    An entire album of
    heavy-handed caterwauling?
    No thanks.
    Cheers.
'Cause you don't give blood and take it back again.
