Can't believe it's been that long. I'm listening to AIC Unplugged today in honor of him. Just my way I guess of saying thanks to one of the greatest voices in music to walk the planet - thank you!

I bought Nevermind before anything else, it was great, and I bought it because I saw Smell like teen spirit video, by chance, on a tv show, which wasn't on MTV. As I said, it was great, but it wasn't that great. When I started watching MTV, when MTV played music, I realized the music world was even larger. I found out about Soundgarden and Temple of the Dog, leter on I recognized the guys from the TOFT video were actually Pearl Jam. And of course I saw the Man in the box video, and that was the shit: that was the kind of music I liked then and I like now. It was like Alice In Chains guys were singing to me, about me. I completely forgot about Nevermind, it was all about AIC to me. First I got Dirt, then Facelift and finally Sap.

I acknowledge the importance of SLTS, Nevermind and Nirvana in music history, but I never considered Nirvana a grunge band, they aren't even from Seattle. Nevermind was the first and only CD I got from them. It was great but not that great: Ten is better, Badmotorfinger is better, and Dirt is better than the other three combined. It's a pity how Nirvana ended, but to me, AIC then (PJ now) is more important, I mourn Kurt, but not as much as Layne, for whom I grieve as well. So, to me Apr 5th is Layne's death date. It's for him I light candles today...

  • Rest his battered soul. One day I will get an Alice in Chains tattoo in commemoration of this man.
Go listen to John Frusciante right now!

I miss Layne like I have never missed another rock musician. Of course I am sad for others who have left us, but it is Layne that I think about the most. 10 years later, and I still think about him at least a couple of times a week and wish like hell he was still with us, and healthy.

Such an amazing voice, so much talent, and such a stage presence. He was truly one of a kind, and I miss him terribly.

I made another avatar to use for a couple of days here and elsewhere in his honor....and I'll probably post a few AIC videos on my Facebook account today as well. And my co-workers will be treated to some AIC when they pass by my office door, that's for sure!

RIP Layne - we still miss you and love you!

April 5th is literally one of the hardest days out of the year for me. To a lot of people I'm sure that sounds crazy but I'm sure a lot of people here understand. I can't believe it has been 10 years already. I'll never forgot hearing the terrible news that day. I cried just like I did when I found out Kurt died.

I'm currently spinning Nirvana Unplugged and AIC will be next.

I'll never forget Layne, not just because of the music but because I also named my youngest son Layne.

    RIP.

Me too. Perhaps my largest musical regret.

Fuck me... well done on ruining this thread with the first reply... what the hell is the point in bringing up a Kurt vs Layne topic?? For what its worth, Nevermind is one of the greatest albums of all time, not just "grunge". Its so much better than any AIC album, its not even worth discussing. There you go, I ruined the thread a little bit more.

    ????

I don't think javis was trying to 'ruin' this thread. I think he was just trying to explain (with an interesting story, I might add) his own history with AIC, and how he got into them. And if you were around and listening to these bands in 1991 - 1992, you know that there were bandwagons for each of them. I think most of us liked all of them, to varying degrees...but those of us who preferred AIC (like Javis) or PJ (like me) to Nirvana seemingly ALWAYS had to defend ourselves from the people who could not understand why were were not first and foremost on the Nirvana bandwagon.

No doubt Javis is still doing this out of habit. Preemptively defending his position from...well...people who believe they have the right to declare what the 'correct' opinion should be. ;)

But the thing is, music is a subjective thing. Back in 1992, I liked Nevermind...but I LOVED Ten. And 20 years later, I still feel exactly the same way. Clearly, Javis feels the same about Dirt....and I don't have the slightest problem with that. My favorite AIC album is probably Jar of Flies...and I like THAT better than Nevermind too.

I don't think anyone is denying Kurt's place in musical history...but it is a perfectly legitimate position to prefer AIC to Nirvana...or Layne to Kurt.

*shrugs* Truth be told, I prefer AIC and Layne to Nirvana and Kurt also. But hey....at least I am willing to allow others (including you) a differing opinion. :)
