it's starting to sound like a "honor killing" to me.

Shaima Alawadi, a 32-year-old mother of five, was apparently planning to divorce her husband and move to Texas when she was killed, a family member told investigators, according to the court documents.

Man, I wish they'd nab the/these guy(s) that did it! How brutal... and terribly sad.

Killing/arranging to kill a spouse for 'thinking' about divorce is not an 'honor' killing. Iraqi women can get divorced if they wish so through khul or the courts. Maybe trying to detract from a assumed hate crime is a strategy, though I do understand all avenues need to be explored. But seeding the seeds of an 'honor' type killing is being just as prejudice.

If one is looking at a jealous/possessive husband doing something about a wive that could - or not - want to leave him, let's call it as it is - just plain and simple murder (or even crime of passion) as if the lady was white american and not 'honor' killing that has all kinds of connotations.

why would you say that calling the possibality of an honor killing is prejudice ? I'll admit I don't know much about middle eastern colture but we have seen these honor killing in the news before of men from the middle east who brought their familys here.

I'm not saying that when you said honor killing you were being prejudiced. What I'm trying to explain (and obviously not very well!), is that often when this is mentioned, it is with all the connotations that go with it. You say yourself: 'men from the Middle East', 'Middle Eastern culture'... (though 'honor' killings are not only a middle eastern thing). Connotations being... from 'that kind' of culture 'those kind' of people. The same culture that can still use stoning as a means of execution, where women are nothing, a backwards society.... etc. I could go on but I think you understand what I mean.

Whatever the reason of this crime, it is heinous and hopefully the killer(s) will be caught and brought to justice, whether a male member of the family (which would normally be the case in an 'honor' killing) or a racist murdering thug.
