he likes images of old people smoking cigarettes
cataracts blurring the iris and pupil
looking, your brain does that little tactile
shuck and jive... the twist to the left that it always does
when you see someone whose eyes are oddly, almost invisibly blocked

but, these viewers believe they're looking at photographs
instead of lead smudged on paper, or bit cleanly thereinto
a capture of corduroy, whiskers, and the water on the eye
so cleanly, so perfect, you think the whole world's gone to black and to white
or that perhaps your brain is bent or maybe gone fritzy

and, if there were no border, no edge to the rendering
meaning quite plainly that if the paper didn't end?
you'd be right
and perhaps still, in many ways
you are
