Help Needed With Turntable

First off I realize this may not be the most appropriate forum for this question, but I figure since I am predominately spinning PJ vinyl on it, that the thread is PJ related.

Perhaps some of the more seasoned vinyl spinners here can help me out. I recently hooked up a turntable that was given to me. It is a Technics SL 3300 and I have it hooked up to a surround sound system that is run by a JVC receiver.

For some reason my subwoofer is cutting out at different points for no apparent reason. Any ideas on why this may be happening?

Also how can I tell if I need a new needle?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Not familiar with this particular model of turntable but are you sure you don't need a pre-amp?

If your receiver does not have a phono-in, then you will need a pre-amp.

Thank you for the responses. I believe you are correct, my received does not have a phono input and this would also explain why I have it cranked and the volume is not very loud. Could you recommend a reasonable preamp? Or am I better off getting a receiver that has a phone input?
