I went up to Boston to see him on Sunday. I was a few hours early by myself waiting to meet people. I walked by the Paradise and heard DF music. I thought the bar area was just playing him on the radio. I walked in an to my surprise he was doing his soundcheck. Since I was by myself and wearing jeans and black T-shirt (PJ with skull man) I went unnoticed and looked like a worked there. I was able to watch a 6-7 song soundcheck with two roadies. If some people are unfamiliar with DF he was a pro-surfer turned musician. He just wrote a tribute song for Andy Irons (surfer who passed away in 2010) and has 4 older albums and two cover albums. He hung out in the crowd at the Paradise during the opening act and mingled with the crowd for about two hours. He is on tour now (many free shows) and I strongly recommend checking him out. On a side note, he sounds nothing like Jack Johnson in my opinion as that is was most people associate him with.

  • This guy is great, very cool music and puts on a great show. I saw him play at the Stone Pony is Asbury Park over the summer, and after the show he hung out at the merch table, took pictures and autographed stuff for people, very very cool of him. I bought a copy of his "Move By Yourself" on vinyl and he autographed it and took a pic with me, really awesome of him. He's also known to hang out during the day around the venue he's playing if there's a beach nearby, and I heard he had been surfing and talking to fans on the beach earlier that day too.

It's actually pretty funny, I was wearing my Eddie license plate shirt from the NYC Beacon shows at the time and the guy at the merch table was explaining to Donavon what the shirt was and how Eddie had different shirts for each city, and Donavon joking around yelled at the guy, "Why the hell don't we have those man?!?"

Groove is such a perfect way to explain him. His shows remind me of a combination of the 70's and funk. But your right he has that "Hawaiian" feel similar to JJ (who I also enjoy) but I just get annoyed when I ask someone if they heard of DF and they say "no" and then I say what about JJ and they say "yes". I just think he is better in my opinion. But don't get me wrong, I like them both as their sound is very positive and relaxing.

Yeah if you go to Youtube he does the "Mustache Manifesto" in which he video tapes himself during the day surfing. His summer tours are usually on the beach so he can surf. I have seen him at Wellfleet (The Beachcomber), Dewey Beach (Bottle & Cork) and Salisbury Beach (Blue Ocean Music Hall) and he surfed prior to all shows. Ironically the first time I saw him he opened for Ben Harper at the LIG festival and I loved him. He did cover songs and the first person who answered the song correctly got a bud light as him and his band were drinking a 30 pack during his set.
