we had to fire a guy at the office today
not because we didn't like him or because we thought we could get something better
not because he's not white, or HE, or young
not because he's generally incapable of speaking truthfully most days
or understanding that for which he was hired...

but just because his ego was larger than the rest of us combined

we tried not to
tried to let him be and do
who he is and what he does
we tried being nice, mean,
micro, macro
we even let him cheat
and we bought him tickets to Hawaii for he and his lovely wife

turns out he's in the way of everything
so, downtrodden, he (making more than any of us)
so encumbered by centuries old paradigms, stereotypes, and hate
(and who could blame him)
that he shows up late
treats women like aging, overweight, dumb, mousy secretaries
until he needs an ally
gossips a lot, plays politics, promotes his "motivational speaking" business
and goes home

and so we fire him
which the children used to think was awfully harsh until I explained that no real flames were involved....
yeah - we let him go
and through his messages, email, laptop, i-pad
all locked up tight with the password RKelly
we find that
like Twain
he had a lot of problems
most of which never happened

i remember having to have "fired" explained to me as a child, being raised southern baptist, i had a whole different picture in my head

(and i think i used to work FOR this guy)

    and, yes,
    very well written
fuck 'em if they can't take a joke

"what a long, strange trip it's been"
