How did Ed and Glen Hansard meet?

Although the guys have always been on the forefront i guess of being into bands my morning jacket, band of horses, kings of leon, etc... The music Glen makes seems so different from what Ed and the guys create. Im a huge fan of glen, the frames, and the swell season as well as once, and the crowds at PJ20 seemed really receptive to Glen and his music, but i dont know, i just see PJ and Glen as completely different bands and styles and maybe thats why they choose him to play at pj20.

Did ed see Once? Was/is he a fan of the frames? Did he catch shows with Glen and Mar playing>

Gotta wonder if Ed's a fan, by extention of Damien Rice and Lisa Hannigan.

Whats the story behind ed and glen? Glen obviously seems to have massive respect for PJ, and obviously PJ wouldnt have invited him to play unless they respected him as well

Glen told the story at most of his shows opening for Ed on the last tour. Apparently someone at one of Glen's shows died (jumped from a balcony I think). Ed then called Glen for the next couple of days to see how he was doing (as PJ went through something similar) and they struck up a friendship. Glen made it seem like this was the first time they spoke, but I'm not sure.

In August 2010 an audience member at a Swell Season show lept to his death during the performance. It was of course a horrific experience for everyone involved - band and audience alike. Ed apparently heard what had happened and having experienced something similar himself (at Roskilde) he made the effort to reach out to Glen to provide some support. Glen tells the story that he received a telephone call from Ed the day after the incident - he had never met or spoken to Ed before but they spoke for several hours that day. Ed then rang Glen again the next day and the day after that and their friendship essentially kicked off from there. Ed invited Glen to get in touch with him the next time he was in Seattle and later that year when Glen was there with his band The Frames they met up and recorded Sleepless Nights together.

Glen often talks about the circumstances leading to his friendship with Ed - being something beautiful and positive that spawned from a terrible event. Reaching out to someone he didn't know at all was an amazing (and very classy) thing for Ed to do - but really given what we know about Ed it's not that surprising

I am a huge fan of both Ed and Glen and personally believe that they are two very kindred spirits. Seeing them together onstage last year in the US was an absolute highlight for me - long may their friendship and collaboration continue

That's a fantastic story. The new Swell Season documentary is fantastic and I hear Glen has a solo album coming out in June.
