Using grenade launchers? Seriously?!
I also read an article somewhere saying that elephants are evolving into NOT growing tusks because of the poachers. :(

The monetary gain from poaching can and has been thrwarted in many instances by offering hunts for the same animals targeted for protection. If the "locals" can see economic opportunity from stopping poaching by offering high dollar hunts, many times the poachers have turned into paid, legal guides.

Even the regulated sale of ivory tusks can help the elephants in a similar regard.

It's a difficult issue for sure and the approach above seems a bit ass backwards but it has seen some success from what I have read.

I watched a program recently saying the same thing.

    Seriously fucked up and heartbreaking.

I have no problem ridding the world of poachers. Bless the folks who are trying to do so.

Hey without elephant ivory where would the Chinese get the material to make their crappy trinkets.

I wonder how many people are aware that a vast majority of the funding for the DNR comes from hunters/fisherman.

    Poachers fucking suck.

oh my god. elephants are basically learning how to stop their ivory tusks from growing so they do not get murdered for their ivory. the rhino will adapt/adopt this same evolutionary skill to stay alive.

to keep polar bears alive, polar bears and grizzlies are mating and creating a new breed of bear. i am disgusted to be human.

i wish everyone who has ever murdered a elephant will be struck by lightning. this my prayer. i say this to the wind, to carry my message and dream up to the clouds to defend all animals. the elephant, a lord among lords.

Evolving not to grow tusks due to poachers??? Really....do not believe that is how evolution works....however, the gene pool could be reduced to only those specimens that did not grow tusks due to mutation or those grew smaller tusks due to mutation.

animals do things differently than they used to because of humans. (does that sound right?)

female moose have learned to give birth near or directly on a highway because bears are on them. a bear generally will not come within so may hundreds of feet or yards to a highway. the moose have figured this out and now they have more succesful births. now more moose are lasting through this birthing cycle/passage and running off into the wilds with their mothers and bears not far behind them.

That would be too kind...I suggest they trip and fall face first into a hot pile of 5x5 elephant doodie and suffocate to near death. And then, when they realize they are indeed alive, they rise out of the steamy pile to realize that one of their eyeballs was exposed to so much poo that they can only see through shit shades.

and then hit be lightning after all that doodie poo in their face and eyes? when do they get hung and tortured? when do they get stoned to death old school style? when does the elephant murderer get fed to salt water crocs and piranha?

    same as the gorilla murderers
they get set of fire and ran over with tanks...3 tanks per gorilla killer

    kill a elephant

And after they fall face first in a pile of elephant doodoo, and struck by lighting, a stampede of elephants can run them over.

That's a change in behavior.....nothing can will its body to change its genetic disposition...some animals can change their reproductive cycles in response to environmental pressures....female rabbits can re-absorb its young prior to birth and coyotes can increase their reproductive potential under certain changes....but a living creature can not change its genetic structure by its own will. Elephants with the larger tusks are more likely to be removed from the species gene pool, thus making it possible for elephants with smaller tusks to appear more successful in passing along the genotype for smaller tusks. The same could apply to rhinoceros with smaller horns being potentially more successful in breeding than their brethren with larger horns, who are removed from the pool due to their more lucrative horns.

I can't read the article right now. It would not look good if I started banging my head on the table in the book store. I admire elephants and support The Elephant Sanctuary which is in Tennessee. Well worth checking them out. May be one the last refuges with as natural a surrounding as possible.

The idea has been floated of restoring elephants to North America since our native species went extinction about 15,000 years. :ugeek:

but isn't this process called natural selection....and which is the key element to evolution?

Then you support death / bombing for killing an ELEPHANT?

Yes, but "nature" or agents of "nature" are making the selection....the animals do not make the selection or the genetic change as a choice....the selection is forced upon them....the potential to mate with elephants with longer tusks, a sign of health and perceived better genes, is limited, so breeding will occur with elephants with shorter tusks....which may just actually be younger elephants....as their tusk continue to grow as they age. But if it is elephants with a genotype for shorter/smaller tusks that do successfully breed, then it is that genotype that will mostly likely be passed forward.
