So this past weekend me and a few friends got together for a jam. Anyways I said lets try " Dead Flowers" so after that we were talking about the Stones for a bit, and my buddy who is not a big Stones fan says " They havent put out a good album since Tattoo You.... of course I said " man are you serious?

Anyways i also was reading a review of the new Springsteen album and the guy writing it said the same thing...that the stones have not had a good album since 1981..

Anyways i think they are both crazy....I admit from 82-88 the Stones albums were not the best...but Steel Wheels, Voodoo Lounge, BTB, and Bigger Bang were all great albums imo.

How do most of you feel about the stones after 1981

I think their last really good album was Some Girls.

I think there are some really great Stnones tunes post '81, but maybe not a complete album. I really like Steel Wheels, but I think I'd struggle to get thru the entire thing if I listened right now

Just a personal opinion....the odd good song ,and they got worse when Ronnie Wood joined.

The Who and Led Zep wiped the floor with them, but the Stones were the press darlings.

I partly agree...I prefer the Mick Taylor years, personally.
While the Who & Zep were technically better, I think the sloppiness of the Stones constitutes a good part of their charm. There are times when they sound like they could fall apart any second, but they just keep pushing because...well...they're the fuckin' Stones!!! :D

Not really. All the later albums have their moments and the odd song but there's a lot of mediocrity.
I swear, for 30 years every album they put out has been "the best release since Sticky Fingers!" or "the best album since Some Girls!"

I have all the Stones albums (on Vinyl) from their first one to Tattoo You. After that I have...what was it-- Still LIfe? And then Undercover. And then that's it. The only thing they did after that was the "Harlem Shuffle" song.
Yep...I'm afraid your buddy and the Springsteen Review Writer Guy are right.

and yes, of COURSE, Exile was their best...

P.S. Favorite songs to jam to ....Monkey Man, Sway, and Loving Cup

I think they've put some good stuff out since '81. I agree '82-'88 isn't all that great, there are some good songs, but not a great album IMO. That's probably because Mick wasn't really a full-time member of the band then, and was exploring a solo career, and he really just showed up to lay down vocals while having no real input in the recording process. Plus Mick and Keith wouldn't even be in the same room back then, Mick and his people would have the studio for a while, then Keith and his people would come in, there was no mingling allowed.

I really enjoy their last 3 albums though, Voodoo Lounge is classic in my opinion and I love Bridges To Babylon.

Has any of that stuff been as classic as anything from the Jones or Taylor periods, or even the early days of Ronnie? Not really, but still a good listen. I think how much you enjoy it really depends on how big of a fan of the Stones you are. I often think of Pearl Jam, a lot of the stuff they've recorded after the 90's, I sometimes wonder if I would still like it had a different band recorded it. I think some of the stuff I might not like, but when put in the context of their overall career I like it, but if you had just played me some of those songs I don't know if I would have liked it.

And just like many people rag on the Stones later period albums, there are hordes who do the same for Pearl Jam. I can't tell you how many people have said to me, after mentioning my love of Pearl Jam, that they "Haven't made a good album since Vitalogy", or "Vs". As with any band you're going to have people who just like the "classic" stuff from the band's heyday, and you're going to have those that go for the whole ride, for better or worse.

Had somebody played Bridges To Babylon to Stones fans in the 70's they probably would have thought it was shit. And I can't help but wonder what would have happened if somebody showed up on my doorstep with a copy of Backspacer or Riot Act in 1995. It's all about context. And nobody expects The Stones to make another Sticky Fingers in the present day, just like nobody expects Pearl Jam to make another Ten or Vs.

Yeah, and the thing about Tattoo You is that if somebody doesn't like it, it's not because the Stones went in some new direction, because almost every song except 1 or 2 came from previous sessions. Some backing tracks were actually used and not re-recorded, and come straight from the Some Girls sessions, and for "Tops" and "Waiting On A Friend" the Goats Head Soup sessions, meaning Mick Taylor is actually playing on them.

A few come from earlier sessions but were re-worked. "Start Me Up" for instance comes from the Black and Blue sessions, but back then it was a reggae song.

Tattoo You is almost a Lost Dogs type of album, but since none of the stuff had leaked out was able to be put out a a new studio album. Although a bunch of songs were instrumentals and they had to record vocals, or as in Start Me Up actually re-recording it from scratch to turn it from the reggae song into the tune we hear at every major sporting event.

The fact that the songs span from Goats Head through Emotional Rescue makes it a kind of strange album, but that's part of what's cool.

Recently my favorites have been "Little T&A" (one of Keith's better songs, and I've loved it since the Shine A Light performance) and "Neighbours", a song I never really liked until the recent release of Vault #2: Hampton Coliseum. That version is great and really got me into that one. The weaving guitars are great.

It's kind like Neil Young... you know there are some duds in the catalog, but when you're as prolific as they are you can't expect every album to be sensational.

Greatest rock and roll band ever.

Is Stripped really considered a Live Album? It's a combination of Live and Live-In-Studio recordings. But mostly in the studio, only 6 of the 14 tracks are live. But seeing as how there is no new original material (the only new songs were the live cover of "Like A Rolling Stone" and studio version of Willie Dixon's "Little Baby") I can see how it's not considered a studio album.
