...if you hate something

toblerussetoblerusse Posts: 111
I love the line in Not For You that goes "if you hate something don't you do it too".

What I am making a thread for is to discuss something I have been arguing with my cousin for a while.

I think the sentence ends in a question mark (?) but he thinks it's a statement.

Me: I think it's a meant to mean that everything we allow our conscious/ego to be bothered by is essentially something that we ourselves also do. In a sense a hypocritical admission that if something really bothers you it's because you've been guilty of it yourself when it serves to be selfish in a given circumstance.

cousin: it's a statement declaring that you should not do what you find annoying or bothersome. A way to decree that shitty behaviour should not be done to others as you don't want it done to you.

Etc and like such as.

What are cleverer than I ten club member thoughts on this?

    It's a statement.

I tend to lean more towards the post writers opinion. However, I will mention that this could also be an example where Ed, being the great writer that he is, has presented the opportunity for words to be interpreted "correctly" in a multitude of ways.

Firstly, let me just say how jealous I am that you have someone close to you in your life that you can have debates about the intricate nuances of Pearl Jam lyrics. Believe me that is a luxury a lot of us do not have.

Secondly, I always thought it was a statement. Not For You is an angry, excoriating rant of a song. Eddie is not asking us any questions here, he's stating.

This is so interesting! I have always envisioned it a question, but now that I think about it, the 'statement' interpretation seems to be more fitting overall. But, that's the beauty of music- so up for interpretation!

I think this statement from above explains it

Songs never really have the same meaning for two different people. And songs have different meanings to each at different times

    1. When Ed's singing it, he doesn't make that question-like inflection (spelling?) at the end of the lyric.
    2. There have been questions in other songs, and in those cases, they actually put in the question mark.
