GNR / Axl

I went to the GNR show at the Tabernacle in Atlanta on March 1st. What's funny is that across the street at Philips Arena on the same night, Radiohead was playing a show and I had no idea until I went over to the CNN Center food court to grab a quick bite to eat before my show. I'm not much of a Radiohead fan; really don't know any of their music, but it looked to be quite a crowd showing up to see them play.

Anyway, even though it's not the original/core lineup, this particular band that Axl has assembled is damn good. (Dizzy Reed is still in the band and he'll be inducted into the Rock Hall next month, along with all of the band members through the 'Use Your Illusion' era.) They played for three straight hours. Played all of the hits, plus a few instrumental jam/solos from each of the supporting members in the band. You just have to be ready for a long night. They didn't take the stage until midnight and as a result, it wasn't over until 3AM. The opening act, The Last Vegas, didn't start until 10:15, so it wasn't that Axl was 'late' showing up; it was just a 10:00pm start time for the night's festivities.

I'm curious to see if Slash and all of the Hall of Fame inductees in the band will all share the same stage at the Rock Hall induction in April.

seems like g n r have been getting rave reviews the whole tour, can't wait until i see them in glasgow scotland in may. I do hope the old members are all men enough to forget the past for a short while and get up the stage for a few songs or more.

Yeah, he really kicked ass and made up for lost time. I think I actually hope he does not reunite with Slash and the others after the Rock & Roll HOF thing and sticks to smaller venues and everyone hating him. We just don't need another mega band, ala Van Halen, doing a mega arena tour. I know I've heard VH sounds good, but seeing Axl in the small club and hearing those songs that meant so much to me played so well was just fantastic.

I can't see them re-unite, for 1 slash is doing so well on his own, but again, getting together for a 1-off would be cool,

I don't see it happening soon either, but I didn't see Van Halen coming either. That Hall of Fame stuff worries me, I like things exactly the way they are now. It would be ridiculous money if they did reunite. People that were Sweet Child of Mine only fans only are probably super rich now and would be willing to pay ridiculous money to sing that at some arena and see Slash with his hair & hat and Axl with that bandana. I wouldn't be made or anything if they did, money is money, I just like that Axl and Slash are outsiders now and more accessible in smaller places.

1st band i was really into , the original lineup had chemistry that can't be replicated the new line up might play the songs better but just don't have the x factor , people always talk about Axl and Slash but the contribution of Izzy shouldn't be underestimated and it was basically game over when he quit.
  • the only one that wants to reunite in that band is Steven Adler, the guy no one wants in the band! I know, I know, everyone says "never say never", look at the Eagles, etc. But I really believe that Axl fucking hates Slash's guts, and maybe even vice versa, and with Axl being successful without him (although it doesn't seem that Axl would give a shit if he wasn't) I don't see it EVER happening.

If a reunion were to ever happen, it would be all members except Slash. Maybe get Tracii Guns in there instead.

It was really the whole original lineup that made them so great. Listen to Adler and Duff. Both have tons of character to their playing.

Everything got more generic sounding when they switched to Sorum.

I think it'll be Slash, Duff and new Guns for the HoF performance. I could see some earlier version of GnR reuniting in the future for some kinda touring. Most of their problems stemmed from stuff that they seem to have all grown out of.

Speaking of kicking ass...........I bet Axl wasn't wearing his Tommy Hilfiger jeans at the show.

I'm sorry this post was so unnecessary but whenever I see Axl Rose's name I picture Hilfiger beating his ass.

I saw G n R a few weeks ago. Thank God I had the next day off because they played into the wee hours on a Sunday night.

The show was great -- MUCH better than I was expecting -- and had everything you'd want from a GnR show, even the obligatory chick pulling her top off as she was sitting on her boyfriend's shoulders.

Or they knew Axl was gonna show up late so they went on later to lessen the gap between bands. I'd be fucked off if even Pearl Jam played til 3 in the morning (unless it was a festival or something). I'm amazed the venue had a licence to allow the band to play til that late. Either way I think it's shitty and disrespectful, every other band on the planet manages to turn up on time - it's not difficult!

I'm not sure what on time means to you. But, I know the NY shows were billed as starting at 11 (doors at 9), and the opener actually came on about 10:30 with Guns at 11:30. So, to me, that's on time. We all know it going in. If you don't like it, don't go. I wouldn't be pissed off if PJ played until 3 if they told me they weren't coming on until AT LEAST 11.

And, to tell you the truth, I'm beginning to think Axl is a genius. It was great being able to not use up time off work (which I easily could, but didn't need to), get to the city, have a normal dinner, go to a bar for a few drinks, hang out, then show up for them to play. Those 8PM starts can make stuff a bit rushed.

Well that's different if you get prior warning. It's a moot point here in the UK because virtually no venue would allow a band to play until that time.

You said about not having to use time up off work, but I wouldn't fancy going to work the next day on like 3 hours sleep. Not to mention the fact that trains stop running around 1 AM here, and driving in and out of central London (my nearest city) is a bitch at the best of times. Nothing practical about it whatsoever.

Yeah. Not as big a deal if you're going to NYC. And what you said is why I chose the Friday night show instead of the Sunday or Wendesday show. And with GA, I was sober by the time we left the after show diner. Very few folks on the road at 4 AM. So, they can set up Friday night shop in NYC if nobody else wants to see them.

They are doing a Euro swing. And, I don't see the timing of shows changing all that much (maybe 2AM instead of 3). But, I guess we'll see.

Curfews are usually around 11 o'clock here! Bands get fined if they go over them, just all seems a bit needless.

Axl has been playing late for 21 years, not sure why people still act surprised by it. If you don't want to deal with it don't go, he'll even tell you that.

I'm neither surprised or wanting to go, I just think it's ridiculous that a grown man earning a lot of money can't get his shit together.

They played the HOB in LA tonight and Brain and Robin Fink joined the band for a couple songs. Also they did Mama Kin, supposedly Steven Tyler was supposed to join them but didn't show, Dead Flowers and then did My Michelle with Baz. A 3 and a half hour show!

I caught their show two nights ago at the House of Blues in West Hollywood. It started at exactly midnight and finished at 3:15. A 39-song setlist. Sebastian Bach came out and sang lead on 'My Michelle'. Awesome show. If folks can't grow some balls and just enjoy a rock show, then why go? Axl doesn't get his game face on until late in the evening and if that's what it takes for him to put on a good show, then that's fine with me.

I went and saw GNR back in 2006. They went on at midnight. Most people get all hot and bothered when I told them that. What they didn't know, but I told them after, was that he went on 30 minutes after the previous band finished. There were 5 fucking bands that night, and started at 8:00. He's not making people wait like h used to, it's just a lot of entertainment that happens to go late, that's all.

Lucky bastard! That sounds like it was one of the best shows by the new band. They did Dead Flowers and Mama Kin which Axl hadn't sang in 19 and 20 years respectively. I've seen some of the youtube clips and the band sure looked like they were having fun, even Axl.

    Garbage.

Axl Rose has sat in his dressing room for hours when he could be on stage countless times.

He made us wait a couple of hours at Reading Festival in 2010 for no reason and then got shitty when they shut him down.

They were superb at Download Festival 2006, but they took the piss in 2010 at Reading.
