I say put your design together and send it to a t-shirt maker. Wear it when you want, then wash it. You can even hold it up in the sun when you're not wearing it and look right at it. Repeat if necessary.
I wanted mine for like 15 years before I finally got it and I love it every time I look at it. I say go for it if you really want it and if it means something to you - but put it in a place easily concealable just in case.
Also, a very close friend of mine owns a great tattoo shop in Chicago...when you're in town we should head over there and he could talk you through it and answer any questions you have!

I have a lot of tattoos... though you'd never know it if I didn't want you to. There's nothing you can see if I'm wearing a t-shirt and pants... however when people i know and i have let see my tattoos ask how many I have I tend to think more about percentage of my body covered than actual number of tattoos... I just love the art and it is terribly addicting. That seems impossible, but believe me it's true....
Anyway, I have to reiterate what many others have said here - find a real artist. Don't walk into some shop and pick flash off the wall, find an artist who only does custom work and work with them to develop your idea... and as RCKCNDY said, different artists specialize in different types of work - make sure you find someone who is interested and willing to do what you want to do... there is no worse artist than the person who's doing something that they think is a terrible idea and in it for the $.
Another piece of advice is get to know the artist personally. Make sure it's someone you can talk to and get along with. Depending on the artist and the pace that they work at, you could be in their chair for 1 to 8 hours or multiple sits. Once they start, it sucks if you realize that you and the artist have personalities that clash... Take it from someone who figured that one out the hard way.
If it's something you always wanted to do, you gotta try it at some point. Just put it somewhere concealable (though I highly recommend not on bone)
Oh - and to the person who said you'll never achieve a high paying, corporate type job... total BS. I'm not going to brag about my job, but it definitely falls into the category you just said a tattooed person could never achieve.
Houston, Texas... Believe it or not, there are 7 million people here... must be a couple of fans who'd love to see you play.
Love mine. I probably would have another if hubby didn't mind. Go for a little one in a discrete place, bum cheek? That way you or noone else would see it.
what's the hesitation? the pain? the fact that it's there forever? Can't decide on a design?
I'm getting my 2nd one 18 years after the first one...because I couldn't decide on a design.

maybe you two could both get one on march 30th. that'd be cool
Although I broke down and got one after wanting one for a long time (and I'm happy with it, it's personal meaning, and where it's placed), tattoos are really just a big trend right now.
Ask yourself if you want one because everyone has one or if you really truly want one.
There are some great artists in Albany.

Nah I'm on RKCNDY's schedule, I know I want a Packer tattoo but the design will likely elude me for many years!
WOW!! File that one under WORST IDEA EVER!

I have kind of an addictive personality and obsessive at the same time.
No you don't...
Yes I do...
Mrs. Kilmer?
Exactly.
That's hot...
I was thinking of someone more rugged but with sensitive side...maybe someone playing a guitar.
