anybody ever recover corrupted WORD files?

I have 15 pages of writing in a WORD file on a USB flash drive. Suddenly, the file name is all greek letters and boxes (weird characters), and it wont open in word, notepad, or openoffice. I cant even copy the files or rename them. The rest of the data on the usb drive works fine. Anybody ever have this happen?

I usually email it to myself as backup, but I screwed up and emailed the wrong file to myself. :?

that sort of thing happened to me last year with my sd card, and all my holiday photos, i finally tracked down a free program that scanned my card and recovered all my photos
i'll see if i still have it on my laptop and tell you.

if it doesn't work just google the question or whatever, and keep searching, i tried a few, before i found one that worked..... for free. i just hope for your sake it was this program.
