I picked one of my buddies up last night and I was listening to Angles when he got in the car. anyways he says " who is this your listening to? " I said " its the new Strokes album man" He says " they still put out new music " haha...anyways it seems alot of people dont even know they are still a band....well people I know anyway.

I still love them....and still listen to angles alot.

I'm a big Room On Fire (2003) and First Impressions Of Earth (2006) fan. I recently fell in love with a song from their first album called Take It Or Leave It.

I like the Strokes quite a bit...love the first album. The problem for me is that the albums go progressively downhill---the latest album doesn't do much for me (maybe I need to give it more of a chance).

Huge fan of The Strokes. Wasn't too crazy about Angles, but love the first 3 albums. They rocked both nights at PJ20!

Buy the import if you get the album Is This It (first album). I understand why they replaced it due to the timing, but New York City Cops isn't on the US version. Plus the cover art is much nicer. ;)
Sorry. The world doesn't work the way you tell it to.
  • well i think part of the reason they arent as hyped and buzzed about is people and the music scene have moved beyond the early 2000's ny guitar bands scene, as much as i loved that scene its gone sadly. And Julian and the band sort of seemed to emulate PJ in their pulling back after Is This It, I know Julian struggled with drinking and drugs and the band has a long history of infighting.

Angles was pretty much rightly or wrongly ignored by every single critic and media outlet last year. I dont think I saw a single best albums of 2011 list that included Angles on it.

Reguardless, the first album, Is This iT, is one of the best albums of the 2000's, and is the album I think of when I think of the genesis of the indie scene. While they were never indie, their asthetic, the cool smokers, the clothes, the converse, tight skinny jeans, and then the guitar based songs with more than a hint of retro, all were instrumental in pretty much every single indie band that formed from 2001 until now.

Room on Fire I think is one of the more underrated albums of the decade. The Strokes are a big tent, big tent indie band, but i think when Room On Fire came out people flocked away from the band because it didnt sound exactly like Is This It.

So, Is This It is a masterpiece and will go down in history as a precursor, or the jumping off point of modern indie music.

I dont think the band declined in quality, I think it was a result of indie music moving away from guitar based buzz bands from brooklyn. Indie in 2012 sounds alot different.

  • The Strokes performing on MTV's 1 dollar bill concert either right before the release of Is This It or just after, is the absolutely definition of cool, along the lines of James Dean or Johnny Depp or something. Their whole posture and vibe and mood during that show was so cool, especially during NY City cops
  • a buddy of mine is to the strokes what I am to pearl jam. He gave me FIOE, and I'm giving it back. Blech.

'Is This It' is easily the best.

    They are definitely progressively worse.

I like the first two songs on 'Angles', but the rest is awful.

I actually have not heard Angles at all, but I am a big fan of The Strokes. Their first album was a landmark album for me as a teenager, and listening to it brings back some really priceless memories.
