BE WELL INFORMED
Informed patients tend to have better outcomes and should be able to better interact with their MDs and enhance shared decision making.
This also helps keep down medical costs.
BREAST MASS
Breast lumps should be approached with a high index of suspicion for breast cancer. 20% of breast masses are breast cancer.
A biopsy is always necessary with the exception of a cystic mass that disappears after aspiration, with negative cytology and mammogram. Non suspicious masses should be reexamined during the follicular phase of the menstrual cycle ( days 5-7).
Pain and tenderness are usually due to fibrocystic disease. Although breast cancer can present with pain, it is often atypical and there is usually no tenderness.
Characteristics of pain with alternative diagnoses include the folowing : heavy or full of milk (fibrocystic), sharp and radiating(radiculitis), itching, burning ,drawing( duct ectasia), burning and stinging ( mastodynia),sore, bruised, stabbing(trauma),throbbing(infectious),aching and locally tender(costochondritis).
BREAST CANCER
Classically the mass is hard as a stone, fixed to the underlying tissue, and has indistinct borders. These findings are not reliable however, because 60% of cancers are freely mobile,40% are soft or cystic, and 40% have regular borders. :? But, characteristics such as stony hardness, fixation to the underlying tissue, and indistinct borders help differentiate cancer from benign lesions.
I found this info from the book Field Guide to Bedside Diagnosis.I hope relaying this info to PJ forum readers
is helpful. I know this reading helps me increase my knowledge base for my profession . I will continue to post various topics that are related to medicine.

lol...
Yup thanks for the info.
It's sad to say that *awareness* is beyond prevalent nowadays.
oh about how we've irradiated ourselves and it was proven from the studies from Hiroshima and Nagasaki that in the intense high rates radiation first settles in the breasts, reproductive organs and colon (because of feces sitting in your colon after youve ate irradiated food supplies)
We' as humans not in a ground zero atmosphere just the same but our exposure less but is over longer period of time. Its basically the same thing.
around here its called Limerick Nuclear Power Plant
unfortunately it is only a couple of miles from my house...can see it from everywhere

I cant stand it. We just keep going at it and swallowing living and breathing nuclear pollution soup among other things. You should see today a year after Fukishima they were "afraid to tell people" article on circulation on the net. *shakes head*
4.5 billion to one fellas ..... 4.5 billion to one...
Good questions. I will try my best to answer them.
The epidemiologic studies are clear regarding BC rate geographical incidence. You are correct about the U.S. being at the top of the list. Other countries with high rates include Iceland/Denmark/Belgium/Netherlands,NZ,
Ireland,UK, andGermany . In general, well developed nations have higher rates. Under developed nations have lower rates. The record disparity may be caused by better record keeping and diagnosis in developed nations. Although without doubt there are many other factors.
This leads me to your two :?: . What are the reasons and solutions for high BC rates in certain countries.
Before I answer, it must be understood that 9 out of 10 studies are rejected by the American Medical Association. Most importantly, is that correlation does not imply causation.
The answers are limited and there is much that is unknown.
BC etiology is multi-factorial.
Risk factors include: high fat diet, caloric excess, poor nutritional status, alcohol consumption, smoking, exsposure to oral contraceptives, lack of childbearing breast feeding, intake of processed foods, pesticides in foods, exogenous estrogens such as milk or meat from estrogen fed cattle. sugar consumption, radiation exsposure, and even lymph blockage due to restrictive clothing.
Environmental contaminents both natural and man made that cause endocrine disruption in humans. The EPA has identified environmental hot spots where wildlife is adversely effected( I can relay more to you on that later).
Night shift work under artificial lights supresses melatonin.Melatonin restrains tumor growth.
Solutions are a work in progress. For now avoid risk factors when possible.Protect the environment.
Eat a nutrient dense diet. Plant based diets show much promise in studies for overall health. It is not what one eats that is detrimental. It is what is not eaten. It is the absence vital nutrients that contain protective factors that cause much harm. Stay active and engage in the physical and mental aspects of a healthy lifestyle. Think positively
they give out KI tablets around here like candy: 4 to a person
Potassium Iodide (KI) Distribution
Radioactive iodine, one of the contaminants that could be released in a nuclear accident or similar event, can increase the risk of thyroid cancer. Potassium iodide (KI) is a drug that, taken in an appropriate and timely dosage, can block exposure to radioactive iodine, one of the contaminants that could be released in a nuclear accident or similar event.
As part of Montgomery County’s continuing emergency preparedness effort, we are again making available one free dose of potassium iodide to each person who lives or works within a 10-mile radius of the Limerick Nuclear Power Plant.
Must present driver’s license at time of pick-up
Pills can be picked up M-F, 8:00am-4:00pm, at the Pottstown Health Center, 364 King Street, Pottstown, PA 19464
and they tell you that in an Emergency should you not have your KI pills at hand, you should keep Betadine in your home, and paint one forearm, or in the case of small children, their bellies, with the Providone Iodine solution.....is this CRAZY or what??? :(
I CAN'T WAIT TO MOVE...got about a year and a half before we can go...hurry hurry hurry
