Visiting Los Angeles - Tips?

I'll be in Los Angeles visiting my sister later this week for a few days. I'm looking for some advice on things I should do, or see, and eat?

Will be renting a car and expect to do plenty of driving.

I'll be staying at my sisters in Culver City but plan on traveling all over.

Any tips or advice is welcomed. One thing I thought might be fun was to take a surfing lesson. I've never been and it sounds like a fun activity. Anyone have any recommendations on surf lessons?

Thanks!

  • there is so much u can do in L. A. a few days is not enough. For Surf lessons u can hit up seal beach(bolsa chica) for great surf lessons. or Huntington Beach. for food there are so many endless possibilities< depends what u want to eat. mexican, try panchos in manhathon beach, there are also afew bars by there, sharkees is a great spot across the street. Long beach also has a lot of good bars and eating spots> try joe josts, u can try downtown long beach or 2nd street long beach, you alos have Pasadena, Hermosa Beach. Stuffed sandwich in san gabriel is a top 10 place to eat a sandwich and have a beer. mahi's in seal beach is the best sushi in town. send me a message if u like i can highly recommend many other spots. this is just the tip of the ice berg.

Go to Disney, see a baseball game, go to the beach, surf, enjoy it.

I was born in Santa Ana... I used to visit CA every year but haven't in a few.
  • Go to the Getty Center. Even if you don't like art that much, this place is cool. Plus it has quite the view of the city.

Also there's a really good french dip place downtown called Cole's.

Getty Center for sure - great location. Also Griffith Observatory -- great views of Hollywood and just a cool place ( lots of films have been done up there ).
Venice Beach and Santa Monica Beach/Pier both fun -and near each other. 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica cool outdoor shopping area with street entertaiment.
McCabe's guitar shop does cool small cheap shows - over the years some biggies have started there.
    And there's Disneyland and Universal.
It's a darn big city with lots to do!

  • Lived there for four years and the things I miss are some restaurants and the Dodgers. The best breakfast burrito I ever had is in Pasadena at a place called Lucky Boy. One of those old school, order at a window places. The guy working the window is always annoyed, which makes the experience more memorable. But that burrito, oh man. Also, if you're looking for some great sushi, check out Blue Fish in Montrose. It's just north of the Pasadena area. Cute little downtown area that my wife and I lived close to so we could walk down there whenever we wanted. It's the most "small town" type place I found in my time there. I'd also check out just about any Korean BBQ place you can find. So damn good.

if you are close to the intersection of Sepulveda/Wasington in Culver City, I'd go eat at Tito's Tacos. Venice isn't far from CC. If you are planning on checking out a Lakers, Clippers or Kings game, there are several restaurants/clubs at L.A. Live, across from the staples Center.

If you are gonna do the Hollywood Blvd. touristy stuff, you'll be a few blocks away from Amoeba Music.....huge, almost intimidating record shop. If you like to roam around a college, ucla is nice.

A few other places to eat....not far from CC: Zankou Chicken, Mastros (pricey steaks), Versailles (cuban food)

Some friends who were visiting last summer took surfing classes at Zuma beach (Malibu). It's supposed to be a good beginner's beach. I believe it was with
    http://zsstraining.com/.

One of my fave places to eat is in Culver City, Waterloo & City. Check it out. Great food. It's on Washington Blvd.

And for tacos, I recommend La Playita on Lincoln and Ocean Park. It looks like a trashy trailer, but don't let that scare you. The tacos are super tasty and super cheap. You can get anything from fish to tacos de cabeza (cow head). Perfect post surfing food.

You can also rent bikes down at the beach in Santa Monica and ride all the way to south bay. That's a cool way to see the beach cities. And if you're into nature/hiking/biking, there are so many great trails in Malibu and Topanga.
