My gawd!!! Built to Spill at the SF Filmore!!!
Now first off, this was my 2nd double-booked show this year, after I bought the tickets, I figured out, "Oh dang, this is the same night as the Cub Scout Banquet!" There's no out there ... as my decline of Alpine showed, family first.
So I'm hoping, maybe there's two opening acts even with the 8pm start time, I can prolly get into SF by 9 or 9:30! Nope, banquet runs long, I get home at 9 and FLY into the city. Stroll into the fog of the SOLD OUT SHOW at 9:50 and BTS is cranking! And it's a really, really thick fog.
I get just over an hour of their set, 9-10 songs, and of those only one was under 4 minutes. They were in a freakin zone -- got Conventional Wisdom (w/ Shit Brown Eyes tag), Stab, Else, Carry the Zero, closed with Goin' Against Your Mind, and some other titles escape me, a few real low key slow jams I'm drawing a blank on.
Man, they were just pouring a thick syrup of sound over us, no no, don't lift your hand out, your soaking in it! And the rest of the atmosphere just combined for a really surreal experience -- from a gym full of cub scouts, to that herb filled hall was just a mind warp.
Seems it was too much for Doug as well, like the last 4-5 songs -- nearly consistently so much that he actually started letting out a good laugh -- he would drop the 2nd line of nearly every verse! You could tell his mind would just blank out on the words, then SNAP right back and he'd keep going. It was funny..
And then the crowd would just errupt as each song ended, only to fade out to the sound snick' snick' of lighters and strong inhales. Pretty hilarious. Doug would be fiddling with his amp and peddles for awhile then look up, "Oh, your still here! Well, here comes another one!"
And best of all ... WOOT! Free Fillmore Posters! And they're awesome!
