I'd just as soon have an ATHEIST candidate...

....who could tell the religious right to go fuck themselves. Hey, believe whatever you want but don't try to force it on everyone by holding these candidates hostage for your votes. And even worse, the candidates all fall in line because god forbid we could be moderate on these so called "social issues." They question each other's "faith" and want to somehow legislate "family values." What a crock of shit. None of that shit is going to create jobs or create security or bring back the american dream.
I'm not even convinced most of the candidates are any more than "photo op churchgoers." I think, early on in politics, you learn you gotta go to church. So you photo op it even though you're an adulterer (clinton, JFK, Newt) or a liar and murderer (GWB). Or........you truly believe, like Mitt, and buy into some incredible story about golden plates; you listen to a Quorum of 12 who you actually think talks to god and your religion goes around baptizing holocaust victims just in case they might prefer the celestial kingdom over Jewish heaven.
Most americans have an uneasy feeling about radical muslims, or radical jews or radical catholics (etc), yet here we are being influenced by the so-called religious right....a group that is neither religious or right. It sucks.

You shouldn't be complaining. We actually HAVE a president who completely disregards religious liberty.
Also, I can't think of a time in our history where the government was more "moderate" in it's approach to social policy. What would you prefer? Complete anarchy?Bristow, VA (5/13/10)0 -

I don't want anarchy.....I'm just more of a personal choice guy....you want to go to church; fine...you don't want to; fine again. My point is that the so-called religious right holds our government hostage over shit that really doesn't need to be legislated. They only THINK we could ever legislate morals, sexual conduct, etc. Whatever happened to the separation of church and state??If I had known then what I know now...

No, you suck. I can see that from your avatar.
Wow- you managed to insult people of every major faith- like 90% of the world- all in one paragraph.
As usual, the most intolerant and hateful commentary is reserved for Christians, but you managed to hate on Jews, Mormons, and Muslims also...
Another pothead internet philosopher, telling Christians to go "fuck themselves".
What a great thread. Thanks so much.0 -

The fact that people find it so necessary to either elaborate or talk about their religion and false sense of morality more so than actual policies and addressing problems our nation faces is proof positive how our system and the representatives running for elections are already failures before they get to office. It's a failure of the voters who buy into it and a failure of the candidates to talk about it.CONservative governMENt
Our government is the potent, the omnipresent teacher. For good or for ill, it teaches the whole people by its example. Crime is contagious. If the government becomes a law-breaker, it breeds contempt for law; it invites every man to become a law unto himself; it invites anarchy. - Louis Brandeis0 -

that's not me in the avatar. it was actually a pretty famous picture from a few years back. whatever.
I'm not saying "fuck religion" even though I'm a non believer myself. I'm saying fuck the religious right, who might tell you they are all about tolerance, when in actuality they are very INtolerant. My point was that, for me, religion and politics shouldn't mix (especially in our very diverse country) and it's a shame (in my opinion) that our policy makers have become so beholden to a group they can't seem to say "no" to.
P.S. I don't hate on all the groups you mentioned but I do think ALL religion is whack and is very much at the root of a great many of the world's problems. And I certainly didn't tell Christians, as a whole, to go fuck themselves.Post edited by Wobbie onIf I had known then what I know now...

you might want to go back a few pages on the train because we have already debated that topic.
my original post was going to ask you to exclude this most recent example, so consider that a softball that i tossed you.
