so.....Rick Santorum home schools all seven  of his kids.

I don't want to offend anyone here who might do it for other reasons, but EVERY person I know who home schools their kids does it so that their kids are not not exposed to the real world. Not that those parents would ever admit to that. :x

Good point. I would think home schooled kids don't interact with others as well. Public schools are not always the best option either. Private schools are mostly for those who can afford it. What's the best option?

I don't see anything wrong with home-schooling, as long as there's a balance - no blinders - exposure to the extra-curricular activities outside of the actual education itself.

I'm not a parent, but I would imagine some don't place much stock in the public - and private - education system.

(and this is even aside from the sick shit some of our teachers have been doing to their students here in LA)

and I can kind of see that but they sure aren't going to interact any better by sitting at home. I just don't know why you would try to do something you're unqualified to do when you've got people who have dedicated their lives to the "science."

I agree but I have to tell you not every teacher is dedicated to their subject. I've had teachers that view teaching as more of a hobby. It was miserable and I feel my parents could have given me the same (maybe better, but debatable) education. My father was a better math teacher to me and I learned more from him then in my classes at a younger age.

On the flip side I HAVE had great teachers that are dedicated to teaching and are very knowledgeable in their subject. I have great professors (except one) right now.

Maybe some parents don't want their children to be raised in the liberal school system and grow up to be underachieving potheads that post on a rock band site all day.

good to hear. I'm just a bit biased because my wife is a truly great teacher. Her principal (30 years in the system) once told me "Codie is the best teacher I have EVER seen."

My sister homeschools my nephew, he was a premature baby and has various health and communication problems, he see's specialists and is making progress, but when he started school he was bullied (being small and quiet)and beat up a few times, So my sister freaked and started home schooling, she hopes to return him to a public school in a few years (atleast that's what shes says) but he is responding very well to it, my sister has her own mental problems and is reacting out of fear, but it's her kid, so who am i to say.

I don't understand do those who are homeschooled have to take specific tests that are regulated? I mean how to universities have a threshold to decide whether or not their grades are legitimate enough to be accepted... I was just curious. Like if my mom home schools me, what's not to say she makes the test super easy or grades me unfairly?

I'd have to assume there are social implications to not attending public or private school (other than growing up to being a pot smoking liberal posting on rock band forums, of course). And there is a certain level of indoctrination by the person who is in charge of your education (and I don't just mean religious).
I'm not saying that if you are homeschooled you are going to grow up with some sort of social deficit (anymore than someone in the public/private system) but there is certainly a recipe for that happening...

this thread reminds me of hippies in the 60's that were all about "anti-establishment" and "like father like son like hell"...anyway what's the big deal about home schooling ? I know a few people that home schooled their kids
because they wanted to make sure they got good schooling and some went onto high school after home schooling, it's about a parents choice to raise their kid's the best they can and see fit IMO.

Absolutely. Plus, HHS can't confiscate your daughter's turkey sandwich and banana when she's being home schooled....at least not yet. Give Barry four more years and that may change.

I have a few close friends that were home schooled. They were pretty above average in intelligence and are now very successful. But their parents were former teachers. I think many that are home schooled are done so by former teachers. Also, they have programs for integrating children together that are home schooled. Its not too bad, but I doubt I'd want it for my kids.

Good question haffajappa...I dont know about regulated tests.

  • I think I learned more from the social aspect of school than I did in the classroom, and I think it'd be hard to replicate that experience. It was good that I was in a VERY multi-cultural school and was exposed to many different viewpoints during my years in high school.
Believe me, when I was growin up, I thought the worst thing you could turn out to be was normal, So I say freaks in the most complementary way. Here's a song by a fellow freak - E.V

    Right on, totally agree.

Even if you forget about the lack of qualifications, and that if your the one teaching your kid, then your kid will probably only ever be as smart as you there is also the fact that if your kid only has one teacher from kindergarten to grade 12, he is only being exposed outlook on life. I mean going to a regular school I had a different teacher every year in elementary school and a bunch of different teachers in high school, so I was exposed to a bunch of different outlooks and opinions regarding the world. Imagine that for a kid instead of getting all those different opinions, you only get really exposed to the opinion your parents have on things.

Home schooling is becoming more and more a smarter option with public education straight down the drain.

the grammy's aren't the real world. I'm talking about the fact that most of us interact with people of different races, sexual orientation, beliefs, etc.....and the sooner you're immersed in that, the better. Unless you prefer to live in a cocoon ;)
