Our government is the potent, the omnipresent teacher. For good or for ill, it teaches the whole people by its example. Crime is contagious. If the government becomes a law-breaker, it breeds contempt for law; it invites every man to become a law unto himself; it invites anarchy. - Louis Brandeis

  • haha, "we're an evolutionary cul-de-sac"
Everything not forbidden is compulsory and eveything not compulsory is forbidden. You are free... free to do what the government says you can do.

In the lifespan of Earth and other species, the human race will be just another passing evolutionary failure except ours will be self-fulfilled rather than scientific.

I love George's take on entropy.

Jeremy Rifkin's book Entropy is also excellent. That book introduced me to the concept of entropy.
“The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man [or woman] who lives fully is prepared to die at any time.”
Variously credited to Mark Twain or Edward Abbey.

  • I was responding to being in a evolutionary cul-de-sac is better than being in a complete dead end.

It is possible for the human race to maneuver past a possible dead end. Currently not looking so good from this timeline, if you want to add in a touch of physics (without the possibility to transfer oneself from one parallel timeline to another) and so youre faced with the simple steps on a 3-d timeline of cause and effect Alone, a possible escape from such a complete failure just in the immediate future we still have the ability to generate 4 possible timelines or outcomes from this timeline alone according to scientific mathematical calculations.

All of them with minimal survival of the human species. Interfering with the possibilities lets say ie through control self fucking interest by big business trying to direct their fortunes vs directing the survival of human kind is then once again limiting the possibilities or paths available to mankind or cutting paths of possible humans who maybe able to "escape" these timelines.

However, like I say the odds are 4.5 billion to 1 for a civilization to live past its technological age.

    Just sayin.

it really is a fascinating concept. it's feckin' SCIENCE dude! the 2nd law of thermodynamics states that in any closed system (like the earth with it's tiny little atmosphere floating through space) entropy will always increase, and most importantly, any attempts to control the chaos [entropy] will only service to INCREASE chaos. so, that's why, paradoxically, anarchy and a free market (less attempt at controlling chaos) will give us MORE order and we won't cause our own destruction as quickly.

Stephen Hawking does a great job of explaining entropy in "A Brief History of Time."

My bad - mistook your comment. Anyways, I agree with your comments below but would add in terms of the odds, as crazy as the 4.5 billion to 1, look at the odds of Earth being in the right zone to host and then evolution to occur.. probably the same odds.. so who knows. Humans don't deserve better odds or another chance, we forsake it all for silly notions.

  • Its insane. But I have to laugh, we may have mathematical variables and theorems paradoxical maybe not so serious like my particular favorite "infinite monkey". Which may be something like a silly simple answer to a complex problem.

Now keep fucking typing and Yes my answer was in the vernacular. Excited?

It really is cool science. We practice entropy every day:

    Go through the day.
    Go to bed.
    Get up.
    Look in the mirror...
    Entropy!

And the more we try to control it...

  • If the Law of Entropy governs ALL of the universe,
why does the Theory of Evolution hold that lifeforms become MORE and MORE ADVANCED as time proceeds? And how did energy go from No-Life to Pro-Life, seeming trashing the LoE?

This isn't a vote for creationism,
it's just something to get you thinking.

Why is the evolution of life immune to entropy which asserts that ALL energy seeks its LOWEST state.

    ?

    Think about it.
"BEFORE life" energy was in a LOW state.
AFTER life, it was in a HIGHER state.
After said life evolved, it was in an even HIGHER state.

I don't know if that's the correct correlary per say. The theory of evolution isn't solely that lifeforms become more and more advanced, but more simply, whatever works survives and what does not dies off, and what does work, adapts, grows and at times flurishes. Entropy on the other hand merely says whatever is created will at some point be destroyed.. come full circle and all systems are in a constant motion either building up or tearing down.

We dont have a hunger problem in the world; we have a food distribution issue or more aptly, we choose to set parameters so some have and some don't have access and ability to obtain it. And those that don't or can't, suffer as a result of this setup. In war we call these types of causalities, collateral damage. In our society and culture, the victims of today's shooting are no different, a result of the setup. There's tons of reasons these things happen and there are ways to fix it, whether it's people having kids who don't want or shouldn't have them, lack of parenting, increase of violence, access to automatic guns (legal or illegal), gun control or fail-safe's like security or better mental healthcare. It's certainly nothing you can change overnight, but it can be, but only when people put the effort in to do so. And in our nation, no one is interested or wants to bothered changing anything. People only care bout shit nowadays unless it effects them directly otherwise, it's a passing comment backed with a false sense of outrage and then dropped until the next time it happens. Society should always blame the person carrying out these crimes, but more importantly, if you don't examine and fix why it occurred, just be prepared for the next time it happens again. We've planted the seeds, don't be surprised when the harvest comes in. Our society continues it's spiral down. It's a civilization, but far from civil. Anyways, everyone enjoy your holidays filled with religion and consumerism.

I rather enjoy how all you idiots continue to debate the same nonsensical issues like abortion, gun control and gays...regularly.. what are you learning..what are you gaining..how are you growing, evolving? The minute you recognize this, the sooner you'll feel at comfort with the society and world around you and future ahead...

"Throughout human history, as our species has faced the frightening, terrorizing fact that we do not know who we are, or where we are going in this ocean of chaos, it has been the authorities — the political, the religious, the educational authorities — who attempted to comfort us by giving us order, rules, regulations, informing — forming in our minds — their view of reality. To think for yourself you must question authority and learn how to put yourself in a state of vulnerable open-mindedness, chaotic, confused vulnerability to inform yourself."

How's all the debate going from you "informed citizens"? Lots getting accomplished, lots changing? Still relying on your specific political party for answers or a political direction? I would hope not.... At what point do you all wake up and dismiss the two major parties and move towards a different direction? Our system is bought and paid for...we are all just as good as our ss number... arguing otherwise is merely delusion. Stop participating in the system and things will get better over time.

I think we are all aware, to some degree or other, that the two party system is at best flawed and that true change is in order but I don't think you will motivate anyone to be more active by implying that we are sleep walking or sarcastically calling us "informed citizens". People who see themselves as being highly enlightened and believe they have all the answers are only deceiving themselves. For example, most if not all of my personal activist heroes are wonderful people who in some fundamental way are also flawed. We're all just crawling toward the lamp, and none of us has it all figured out.

I don't presume to know everything or anything of the sort. I do however have an astute eye for seeing what does not work. Our nation is too wrapped up in minute, naive details because it is far easier to argue about controversies, fear-mongering and finger-pointing than to actual learn, access and fix a problem. It's why little of importance changes in our nation and people keep going back to the well of all they wish to know for answers which are not there. These two quote aptly sum up why our nation has failed in its vision as a representative democracy and new experiment gone awry.

Who wields power is not important, provided that the same hierarchical structure remains always the same. - George Orwell

When the people find that they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic - Benjamin Franklin
