At one time mankind thought it totally Looney to even conceive the thought of exploring the great beyond of space. One of the great achievements of modern history and mechanisms for the uniting of nations and people has been the quest for knowledge on this great mysterious expanse. This knowledge and it's byproducts have become entrenched in our society as the cover and artwork for Binaural is an example. The images were taken of nebulas by the Hubble Telescope and required the permission of NASA.
On this day 50 years ago Col. John Glen orbited the earth 3 times in 5 hours in a tiny ship called "Friendship 7" becoming the first human to do so. While others preceded him, this was a monumental achievement and provided the confidence inspiration and foundation for the exploration of space. Glen had to take manual control of the craft due to a glitch that was pulling it to the right and would have hurtled him into space. NASA, in flight, also had to order Glen to go against procedure and not detach the Mercury capsule's retro rockets as usual, due to the fact they were worried the straps would be needed to hold a failing heat shield and protect Glen from incineration upon reentry. All this with the knowledge that 135 million held it's collective breath below watching the events unfold live on television..... SIMPLY AMAZING!!
