Jesus Christ Superstar

The best musical ever made.

As a kid, my parents made me watch it over and over. When I was really little, I loved it. Then, as I got older - probably around age 12 or 13 - and started being cynical about God and religion.... and musicals too.... I just thought it was dumb. I couldn't stand it.

Well, years went by and throughout my teens I got into a lot of different kinds of music and learned to appreciate art.

When I was 18, I watched it high and my mind exploded. I am so appreciative of my parents for forcing it down my throat. Im 27 now and watch nearly every day.

Any love for this flick/rock opera?

    Yes!

I watch it every year during Easter weekend (I'm twisted, I know).

I saw the revival on Broadway several years ago, and it is making its way back to Broadway this spring (I think).

ive seen the live broadway production tour twice.... both in Sioux Falls SoDak and it was off the hook.

The dude from living color played Judas the first time. cant remember the dude who played him thesecond time. Ted NEely was the shit, even though he's twice the age of Jesus when he died.

The first live rock show of this kind I saw when I was 10. I absolutely loved it then and have loved it ever since. The music is my favourite from Andrew Lloyd Webber, and he's done lots of great stuff since, but this remains the most special, imo.

When we were kids, someone gave my sister and I a cassette of that soundtrack. We memorized it. We wore the tape out! :P

We did it for my 6th grade play. I got to play Judas. My uncle recorded it on Super 8, have to see if he still has copies.

Which movie version do you prefer - the 1970s one, or the one made in 2000 that had Rik Mayall as Herod? I lean towards the newer one, but the older one is classic.

The original album (1970) with Ian Gillan and Murray Head > any other production. If you haven't heard that one, and you like the movie, give it a listen. Ian Gillan as Jesus is amazing.
  • It is my first childhood memory. My mom and my cousin took me to Broadway when I was 3... Apparently I memorized the entire score... I was singing along ... There were nuns sitting next to us... The said my singing added so much to the enjoyment of the show and they wish I would go to their school... I'm jewish

It had a profound effect on me and my taste in music throughout my whole life...

    Great thread.

I've never seen it. My dad has the 1970 version on vinyl and I've listened to it a couple times. From what I remember, it is great stuff. I may have to go digging through his collection to find it and listen to it.

I'd love to see it on Broadway one day.

    Great thread!
